Hi All,
Just noticed that there has been a 30% increase in memory prices in my area, namely PC100 chips. Just wondering if this is a local, global, international trend?
Any explanation of the reason?
Thanks,

yeah there has been a dramatic increase in price in my area too(socal). I've read at a couple of places that there were production problems somewhere so that's the reason prices are so high

Thanks for your feedback!
Do you guys think that this is temporary? I mean, should memory cost this much or have we gotten spoiled from it's low price over the past year or so? It's been on the rise for the past 3 months. In Toronto, Canada back in May/June, the price for one 64Meg strip was at $65 CAD (= $1.20 US /forum/wink.gif). I just check one of my more reliable places and it was up to $160!!!
I really want to increase my RAM but I should I just wait out the storm?

One of the places I buy from had this to say a few weeks ago:
Memory prices have been climbing for the past two months. It doesn't look like it will get better any time soon. Based on what has happened the last several years, prices will climb on memory and hard drives from now through mid-October. They then begin to drop in late November, and usually begin a long slide in January. The good news is that declining prices on CPUs has kept overall prices down. Let's hope AMD is successful with the K7 (no motherboard availability yet) and keeps price pressure on Intel!
Now on 9/7 this is what they posted:
Memory just took another massive jump, about 30%. We checked multiple vendors, all are up about the same percentage.....To those of you following our pages, this shouldn't come as a total shock. Prices on memory have been working their way up for a long time. We didn't expect anything like this increase, however.
Who really knows when it will end?

Get this sh*t...
About two months ago I bought 64MB pc-100 for like $60 (thru a site I won't mention).
Two days ago, I check the same site for their latest price on the same SDRAM... $90.
I think,"Ok, prices are going up... gotta deal with it. I really need the memory so I'll order it some time this week."
THE VERY NEXT DAY, I go to order it... $105!!
A $15 increase OVERNIGHT! man, I'm so pissed about that.

I can't help but wonder if the rise in price isn't in some way tied to the proliferation of the so-called "free with ISP contract" computers being hawked to the public these days. Most of these things come with only 32Mb of PC100, and I would suspect that most people would want to immediately bump that up by a stick or two, resulting in a tremendous demand for RAM- for a while. Indeed, during a trip to Circuit City last month, I heard an "expert" computer salesman telling someone who had just bought one of these freebies that "the RAMS were expandable to 128 chips," At this point the clueless customer, no doubt impressed by this salesman's technical prowess, announced (with checkbook in hand) his burning desire to immediately "expand the chips in his RAMS." HMMMMMMMM.
Oh well, eventually folks will realize that even in the computer community, NOTHING is free. The rush to acquire one of these "great bargains" will die down, and hopefully RAM prices will drop again- which will make me very happy, as I too want to "expand my RAMS..." /forum/smile.gif

Okay this is getting crazy! 30% was pushing it to the realms of the ridiculous, but this is unreal...
I bought PC100 64MB in August for about £35/$50 excluding tax. I appreciated at the time that this was a good deal, but...
I check my favourite reseller today and it's £79/$126!!!!!! /forum/frown.gif
A rise of 225%!!!!!!! ARGGGHHHHHHHH!
Who are these guys? My crack dealer treats me with more respect! /forum/wink.gif

Yep, it is getting crazy in UK.
I bought a 128Mb RAM PC100 Cube memory 2 months ago at Insight UK for 56.99 quid (excl. VAT). Now, the very same Cube memory is priced at 159.99 quid !!!
That's a rip off !!!!!

Now I am P****d my supplier has just informed me that the next batch of ram coming in will be up a minimum of 35% and that is not fixed till it hit's his warehouse might be higher, It's starting to have an effect as can't manufacture systems much longer without massive increases in there price to restore profit margines.
Let's hope the prices won't go higher that they are now....

My 2 cents... It goes without saying that if you can hold off buying, then do so.
It is quite pathetic when I can actually get a better deal on a stick of RAM going into a big hifi/electronic's store such as Future Shop Canada than in one of the specialty computer shops!
Anyways, I have a bad feeling that once the dust settles, some shops may still fuel the RAM increase by keeping prices inflated so that they can milk this to the max.

More info... The Register has been writing on this for a while... RAM makers are cutting back production 'cos they got burned earlier in the year with overproduction/lower prices:

even if prices from manufactures comes down,it will still take time for older stocks to clear the shelves, most outlets won't sell below cost, the smaller guys start only purchasing as and when they have an order, it's like lotto buying in bulk now, could end up taking a real hiding if prices fall while you have large stocks, the gamblers can have the profit or loss!
I live in Holland and prices has gone wild overhere; up to 250%.
My reseller told me that some big manufacturer in China has closed, so the demand is to big for now. Thats why prices rise sky high. I suspect this to hold on for a few months.

now I am sick prices in NZ now at $259 per 64 meg stick if you can get. just came back from my wholesaler, told me an interesting story, seems he had a visit from a couple of suites yesterday they were buying retail wanted to purchase his total stocks of 32's,64's,128's and 256's this happened when another buyer was a warehouse, (the one who witnessed it has something to do with the cities business center. told my wholesaler he had seen suites before in some stockbroker outfit, so this could tie up with some company going out of production, and the suites are useing ******* **** to make a buck or two, my fear is the ram they buy will drive up prices further and increase their profit when they resell!

Hi,
My reseller told me that some big memory manufacturer in China has closed his factory.
That's the reason for the shortage on the market, so prices go sky high.
I have not heard any of this on CNN-Bussiness so i don't know if this is true. As for the prices rising everywhere i think it is.
So, it could take months for the shortage to disappear.
Bye

As this is one post I'd like to close and end of with positive news, I just wanted to shed some more bad news. As I do not want to disrespect what happened in Taiwan, I heard that one of the plants that produce memory chips has been affected. I'm not sure if it was a power outage or a destroyed factory. Whatever the case, the earthquake will definately impact the manufacturers one way or another.
It does not help alleviate the increase in memory. In fact, it may even delay things even further. This crisis(?) does not help boost new computer sales. Even if Intel or any other component makers drastically lower their price, they may only attract customers looking for upgrades /forum/frown.gif.

Hi All
must admit been a bit lax over getting info from some sources on this matter, just come of MS OEM BBS site re this matter, MICRON are retooling on 32mb, 64mb, 128mb, sticks not on the 256mb sticks , there should be no increase in 256mb sticks they have increased price on others 12-18% depending on location of distribution, so distributor are greating price hike, and the only way to deal with this is to say no, so speak out and be counted, if you are a systems biulder tell your customers the reason after all people like Dell, Compaq, Gateway and other big systems biulders are not affected as they are on 12 month contracts for their Sdram prices. Micron seem to be saying that 128 pc100 should not be above $100 usd.
so start complaining you are being ripped off by profiteers.
It's not just PC memory /forum/frown.gif
Expect everything so go up soon!
Chip crisis may hit mobiles

So far we have:
a) closed factory in China
b) earthquake in Taiwan
to which we may soon be adding
c) political and economic instability in Indonesia
d) ditto in Malaysia
e) sabre-rattling in Korea
If there's anything going on in the Phillipines, then that'll probably shaft us too.
It seems hi-tech industries are the first to go when the s*** hits the fan.
Do "Western" economies actually make stuff anymore, or do we just suck it from everywhere else?
Haha just a thought: maybe the guy who owned the Chinese factory owned a few others. His commodity has just doubled in profit AND he's cut his overheads!

Well I was looking at new laptops as mine got damaged in a recent lightning strick (cd rom, floppy and the pcmcia bus don't work).
Sunday the Price was IR£1420. Today when I went to order it (Gateway) the price was IR£1505.
Rang them to ask and they said that all laptop memory had risen in price by 50%.
Rang my local pc shop and they said that PC-100 SDRAM is now about 40% dearer than what it was last month due to a factory closing.
