ok just about a week ago my internet has been acting up on me. after 20 min or so browsing the net my internet explore come up with the page that says that page cannot be display and i have to close it and re open it about 5 to 10 times before it come back in. i know that it isnot my connection because my im stays on. anyone know how to fix this. also i got a switch that i hooked up to my dsl modem and when i try to connect the other laptop to the switch it tell me that there is an ip conflic what does that mean. when i connect the other laptop my connection is lost in both computer

you need a router, not a switch. power off the modem when you switch between computers for now.

your ISP will typically assign only 1 IP. that's why you are seeing an IP conflict. the IP lease is still associated with the other computer. a router allows you to use one connection and share it with many computers. technically, a router is a device that connects multiple networks.

thanks. i was lookin at micro center and they had a belkin router for $10 after mail in rebate and they are just across the street from me but i think im going to wait so when i get my laptop i can get a wireless router. right now im fixin my friend laptop.

I don't recommend belkin. I've had nothing but problems with those. get a linksys, dlink, or netgear.

You could enable internet connection sharing. You would have to set up a connection for internet thru the other computer. Use one as a server.

ICS sucks. a router is much better. if he's going wireless anyway, then ICS is just too much trouble.

yeah im leaning more towards netgear for my wire less because when i use to live with my parents we had a linksys wireless router and it kept disconecting on me. any good model that i should be lookin at???

The SuperG models would be the best, but they are all about the same otherwise.

Totally agree on the Belkin router, I had one and sent it back.
I have used both Netgear and DLink switches and Routers.
Both manufacturers routers have been great and pretty simple to set up and manage.:t
