As of right now, I’m running XP Pro behind a linksys router.
I’ve been googling for hours and pawning through the old posts. I can’t seem to find what I’m looking for. What are the other ports beside 21 that I have to forward?

I’ve registered a domain name and I can see when people log in but they can’t see any directories, so I know the domain name is working. They get the login box but then the good old flashlight comes out. I’ve forwarded port 21 through the linksys router but I know I have to forward some high ports for the client side to “connect” so to speak. Every where I’ve looked gives totally different examples of ports to forward on the server side. I’m not to keen on enabling DMZ hosting to open everything up.

Also, are there any special options I need checked within xp to make this work? Like maybe some special services or something.

I’m getting a little frustrated with this, so if I forgot any info just let me know. TIA

Lodge, port 21 is the only one you need to open to host an FTP server. On the XP machine, make sure the firewall isn't blocking port 21 inbound. Also, you do have an FTP server installed on it, right? If you have done everything I mentioned, it might be a problem with the router. It may need a firmware update before the FTP will work correctly.

Are you using IIS or a 3rd party server software? Do you use a software firewall as well as the router? Is the server setup to use port 21? Most can be changed to a different port, but 21 is the default, and all that is necessary. Are you setup for annonymous access or user accounts or SSL or what?

It's been a few years since I had an ftp server, but all I needed was port 21, no high ports on the router were necessary.

edit: I kinda skimmed through this article (http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1491&page=1) to refresh my memory and see if there were some XP issues... Hope this helps... Gene

Here's sumpim else from some forum might be relevant...

Do you have windows xp pro? or 2000 ? if so, you might have to configure the NTFS permission as well. Right click on the folder and click on the security tab, (if u can't find one, tell me....xp might not have it since they hide this from normal users by default), then if there is an entry for EVERYONE, click on it and click on FULL CONTROL or READ chkbox depending on what perm u want to give them. Click apply and see if that works. If there ins't an entry for EVERYONE, click add and there should be an entry there. click add after selecting it and now you should have an entry at the security tab. . .

I've had this issue for a simple network access before trying to share files in various directories on XP... had to goof wiv it awhile and added a new new entry to get it workin, but it was a removeable drive that I use on several machines... :t

I’m running Nortons firewall and have even tried turning that off. I’m using a third party app right now Serv-U. Do I still have to have IIS installed when using a third party program? I’m not allowing anonymous logins. Do I need to “share” the folder. Every time I check share this folder on a network I get an error message. I had it shared before, but now I can’t seem to get it. Here’s the error message I’m getting.

PASV
227 Entering Passive Mode

That's where users get to in Serv-U. They log in but get a, Time expired. Make sure you have permission to access this folder.

Where\how can I share a folder over the network. I think I'm about to kick my computer in. I haven't been this frustrated in a while.

I'm guessing here, but it seems that sharing is the problem if they don't have rights to access the folder.

I don't know what I did, but I can't share anything on a network now. Maybe a service I turned off to slim xp down. I wanted to just get this up and running to figure it out, then I'm gonna set up a dedicated 2k machine for it.

Check out the Serv-U knowledge base (http://www.serv-u.com/support.asp)

here's one (http://rhinosoft.com/KBArticle.asp?RefNo=1102&prod=su)

here's another (http://rhinosoft.com/KBArticle.asp?RefNo=1050&prod=su)

This link (http://rhinosoft.com/KBArticle.asp?RefNo=1044&prod=su) seems very relevant. I didn't realize you need a high port range for pasv

Thanks a lot gene. I think that last link is the key. I'll mess around with it tonight\tomorrow and let you know how things go. Not sure if anybody will be around to test it out tonight.

Lodge, you need to set the permissions for each user on each users home dir. (weather they can upload, download, delete, execute, ect)

Even if you havent set any permissions at all they should still be able to list at default... thats the weird thing.

Also, ports 2000-2010 are defaults for PASV ;) You dont have to use those, you can use any besides 21, but if all you got fowarded is 21 and nothing else, then thats your prob right there!

Man I tell ya, this is something else. So would I have to setup a new group and users in xp to allow access to these files? Would I also have to allow remote assistance or anything like that? I’m starting to wonder if the problem is on my end or not. It’s just so weird that they can actually log in and I can see it, but they get no listings of what’s in the home directory.

I might just wait and get this 2k box up and running so I don’t end up compromising my main rig. This ftp we be a great convenience\learning experience if I can ever get it up and running. I think this is my first post ever in the networking forum.

Here’s a shot of the error message my friend is getting. I’ll have to ask him and see for sure if he had a firewall up or not. I know he’s just running a single computer so there’s no router.

That sure looks to me like a permissions error... If you're having sharing issues, prolly want to get that sorted ;)

OMG. I think I might have just figured it out. I didn’t have file and print sharing installed. I swear if this is what it was, I’m going to shoot myself. Gene if you read this before, well I don’t know, I’m going to send you a pm. :t
