I was just wondering if anyone purchased the 98 update cd and if its worth my 20 bucks. It seems a lot of that stuff can be downloaded for free (if you have the patience and a fast connection). Thanks

Comments from friends that bought the disk: "The worst $20.00 spend". If you read the "Computer Currents" they will say almost the same thing. Problems with the Internet Connection and bugs on Internet Explorer. A friend's cdrom stop working after upgrading. Make sure that you update all the drivers including the Ide controllers in your motherboard. As usual, Microsoft adds more bugs to the operating system. I am waiting for Microsoft's Windows 2000. Hope it helps.

Yeah, Ive heard a lot of issues with it. One post I read here said now he (she?) cant shut down Windows. I suppose if it really screwed me up I could always spend the night starting from scratch.

You guy's believe everything you read?

I think it's the most stable Windows yet, just don't try to use internet sharing. It's disk access is faster, it has less problems and detects more hardware than the early version.

The only other querk I found is the Outlook Import function doesn't work too well, but you can get around that.

It's worth $20, and all the one off problems people have, like losing drive controllers, happen to them regardless of the OS!

Thats what I think, and I have it!

It's a roll of the dice as far as I am concerned. It comes down to hardware and software compatability and there are a million combonations. I waited two years before I got Win95 and over a year before I got Win98 and it will be two years before I get Win2000, if at all. I'm a sit back, wait and see kind of guy.
If it works for ya, it is an electronic marvel. If it does not work for ya, it is a pile of cow dung.
Such is the techno evolution, it can be a roller coaster of a ride.

I think the windows 98 Second Edition is much better than the others. it is more stable and it doesn't need cd so much (when you example chance network selections, normal 98 needs cd, the second edition don't need)

If you were wise enouhg when you install any of thewin9x OS's you want to but the win9x folder on you hard drive. This folder has all the CAB files for win9x so you will never need the CD again. Also win98 se upgrade is going to fix problems just like OSR2 did for win95. YOU have to judge if it is any good for what you want it to do. It is hard because you don't know if it is the cat's meow. If you have win95 then it is worth it. If you have win98 then wait till you can get a friend to split the cost with ya. Or if you need to reinstall windows for some reason then put win98se on.
Well thats my nickel,

I had only one problem with the $20 upgrade. My NIC cards needed driver updates that were not available when my CD came. I waited about two weeks and checked and found that D-link had released a new driver. It seems to be more stable than 98. I only have one complaint. The $20 upgrade disk does not allow a clean install. Now to do a clean install, I have to install 98 and then upgrade to SE.

Another alternative which I did't know about at the time I ordered the 98SE Cd is a $5 cd called W98 sp1. MS says it has all of the fixes of 98SE but none of the new features. I would be interested in seeing comments from anyone who has tried it.
