Hey guys, got a few questions for those of you that know Linux:

First off, I've got Linux SuSE 9.1 (thought it was 9.2 but apparently not). I've been trying to find a good M$ emulator and have run across Wine and Cedega. Can't get either to work. I can get Wine to install through the rpm file, but when I try to configure it with "winecfg" it doesn't show the drive, so I enter the drive in and then click OK, but then nothing happens and if I go back in there's no drive selected again... If someone could give me a step-by-step installation process I'd really appreciate it. Also, I can install Cedega (4.1-1), but I have no idea how to get it to work.
Another question is that I want to make my second hard drive accessable in Linux. How do I do that? I've got my swap drive on Drive C: and my slave is Drive D:, secondary master.

Another thing is that I have a Conexant WinModem, is there a way I can get it to work in Linux by using Wine or another emulator program? Maybe such as VirtualPC, if that even works for Linux and not just MacOS. I'd like to get away from M$ and use just Linux, but I've got to get my Windows programs and hardware to run on it.

Another thing, is there another version of Linux that would be more user friendly than SuSE, or have Windows emulation installed? I've used RedHat before, but I couldn't really tell if it was too much more user friendly or not because I didn't do a whole lot with it, and didn't try to run Windows programs on it.

I found Wine to be a bit of a pain in general, so you're likely to be better off looking for Linux alternatives to your Windows programs rather than going the emulation route:

In regards to wine I think you'll find it a lot better if you research ways to avoid using it than just running to it for every program you want. I know people who use wine to run msn messenger, ms office, and you might as well just not use linux and use windows if you're gonna do that.

you say you want to get away from MS? You're hardly doing that if you're just emulating everything anyway.

Well, mainly I just want to emulate my games. I'll still keep WinXP on my system, just because I could be sunk without it. I just want to use Linux more and MS less...

Sorry i can't be of more help there, but winmodems on linux is just not a good idea.....good luck and give suse a chance, it grows on ya ....

Well, actually, if I can't get DSL here soon, I've been thinking about getting a high quality US Robotics USR5610B modem to make my dialup a little faster, and that would work with Linux.
