My cd-rom takes forever (sometimes it won't even do it) to spin up after putting a disk into the drive. When I try to access the drive from explorer it gives me an error message that says "cyclic redundency check" and no matter how many times I hit retry it keeps coming up. I have to open and close the drive tray 5 or 6 times before it will take. I've tried re-installing the driver for the drive but problem persists.
'Little help?

That is an error detecting code (similar to Checksum) for date stored on disks.

It must be reporting that it is encountering errors when reading the disks. This happens with more than one disk, right?

Yup!
It happens with CDR's and factory CD's, Data and music CD's. Its a non-discriminating little blighter. It hates all CD's.

I got a similar problem and also noticed little specs of clear grease on one of my CDs - I took the drive apart (I know it was extream but the stores were closed and I couldn't buy one of those head cleaner disks); anyway, I found that one of the positioning mechanisims was throwing off a little excess grease, I cleaned this and cleaned the read "eye" also, then everything was hunky-dori - okidae? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

How does the device manager look? Any yellow exclaimation points?
