Hello,
my 2.1Gb Quantum Fireball HDD yesterday died on me, it's now not being detected in the BIOS startup sequence and when the head would normally move when the pc's powering up it now makes a clicking noise, it sounds like the head isn't being "controlled", there is some important data on the disk which i'd like to recover, i'm wondering if it's not being picked up in the bios startup does it mean that the control itself is damaged and possibly the harddisk(data) is actually ok meaning, if i could replace the controller would i be able to recover the data from the drive????? Anyone?

Try this:
Try installing a new calibrator it sometimes conflicts with the
gearstick on the main harddisk controller

It sounds like the click of death....Data recovery is possible through some data recovery companies, but the cost is usually more that the new HD itself. Good luck.

If it's completely dead, why not try removing it and tapping it lightly with the handle of a plastic screwdriver to get it spinning? Things like flipping it over and tapping it have been known to work. If it's already dead, you have nothing to lose, right? If you do get it going, get all your data off it immediately. Might be your only chance...

Yes! I solved it, it was a malfunctioning throttle, i replaced it and now the disk moves from 2nd to 5th gear in under 3 seconds - AMAZING!
