In my view the new mobos are actually pretty amazing in what they offer - more likely it's an issue of DIY and the problems that come out of building more and more complicated machines (video cards, sound cards, driver conflicts or problems, self inflicted software problems, etc.)
I have some PIII's that have been pretty much bulletproof (replacing 'em with P4s for Christmas) but I think it's more a matter of building a stable system then leaving it alone.
If you stay away from certain manufacturers there's not an issue of quality.....

The newer one have more things built onboard that can go wrong, harder to trace down any problems that way as you cant just swap out parts like you used to.
Other than that, i personally have seen no more issues with my own systems than I used to.
When I get one to fix its because something is wrong, I dont see all the ones that are working fine so I guess I would be somewhat blinded by that fact.

Still rollin' a freetech p6f91bx mb with a pII350mhz cpu. 640mb of pc133, a good 2x Ati rage128 video, soundblaster live audio and a promise ata133 scsi card and this thing is keeping up with my newer equipment!!
I also agree with what was said earlier......The instalation is only as good as the installer....

and a promise ata133 scsi card
a good fast HD and interface makes all the differance in the world. The CPU's of old are more than fast enough to keep up with most any normal everyday thing. Im on a PII300 lappy right now with a newer HD, skips right along.
For most people with newer, faster CPU's, its just a waste anyway.
And, yes, a good installation does make a big differance.

It's a paradox. Technology makes things better or more complicate (ie life worse). For computer parts, years ago everything was made separate and you were required to know more about each board. Now mobos come equipped with almost all, training users to be idiots. Everything is auto detected and configured. Long gone were the days of jumpers config, memory compatibility rules, etc. :p
