Hi,

Hopefully this is a simple problem. I've just built a computer for my girlfriend from old computer 'bits'. Its a P200 + Creative 24x CD-drive + 1.9 Gig HD.

I've installed Win98 and that booted OK. I then installed Norton Utilities 4 and Office 2000. Now Windows hangs before it has loaded properly.

It works in safe-mode so there's got to be a conflict somewhere. Is there anyway of diagnosing what is wrong? I've tried uninstalling both Office 2000 and NU4 through Add/Remove programs but even when removed the system won't start.

I've installed Win98 twice now because of this problem and each time this has happened.
I thought it may be the CD drive, it clicks four or five times while the computer is initialising and I couldn't install Win98 directly from the CD because I couldn't boot from the CD-Rom even though it was selected as the first boot device in the BIOS.

Basically I'm just asking if there's anyway of diagnosing my problem?

Thanks in advance to anyone who may help.

Well, i can't offer any help, but almost the same thing happened to me. Last week i tried installing office 2000, and it completely messed up my system. Although i could boot, all my drivers were deleted. I could reinstall them, but everytime i rebooted, i lost them again. i reformatted, reinstalled 98, and now office 2000 works fine. don't know why, but i'm more than content blaming microsoft.

Rich H... before you FORMAT...(bad idea) go to safe mode and run MSCONFIG and use that to troubleshoot.. It is self explanatory.
