I have Windows XP, IE 6.0, and a 56K modem. I currently use Juno via the telephone line. I have been getting unpredictable "page not found" errors when browsing the Internet. I hope it is not a virus, although I had one at one time that has since been removed to my knowledge. The problem occured since I started using Juno, but my instincts say that Juno is not the cause. Here is a description of the problem:

Roughly 20% of the time I experience problems where IE says a page cannot be found even though I know the page works.
Usually all I need to do is retype the exact same URL and it works. Another odd thing IE does is that it doesn't seem to search for the URL I typed in. For example, I type "www.juno.com" but the bar at the lower left says "Searching for www.www.juno.com.com"; It duplicates the "www" and ".com" for some reason. It is quite annoying and I don't know what to do. I have treid reinstalling Windows, reinstalling Juno, and reinstalling IE. No dice. Help!

Thanks.

Marc

If you type "www.whatever.com" into the address bar and press CTRL-Enter, the browser will plug in another www....com. In other words, you can type in "whatever" and press that key combo and get the www. and .com entered for you. Be sure that the CTRL key is not stuck or activating by itself.

Thanks Bill for your reply. I don't think that's it, but I learned something new :)

The thing with the www.www. does not happen all the time, only occasionally. Most of the time I just get page not found errors that require me to refresh and then the page works after one or two attempts. However, sometimes the www.www thing rears its ugly head but not in the address bar where I type, only at the lower left where it says "Searching for..." and the URL. For example, one time I typed www.yahoo.com and it said "searching for www.www.yahoo.com.edu.

Could this be DNS errors at the ISP's end?

Thanks again
Marc

Ok then - scan for spyware, trojans and viruses:

Use Ad Aware. Spybot and your choice of free AV programs. Scan in Safe Mode if you can.
