To give some back ground:
A guy buys a new PC and wants to transfer all his info to it from his old pc. So the data is copied to the server and then copied back to the new PC when its added to the network. However, a copy of this information was left on the server for all eyes.
The information in question included a very sensitive excel document.
Does anybody know of any way of telling who opened the excel file since it had been copied up to the server?
I know its a long shot but you never know!
Thanks

Your only shot might be if the server was set to log all security realted events. Then it might show up in the event logs.
However, I am guessing that you are out of luck.

What kind of server? Microsoft or Novell?
We still use Novell at work and there is a built in security access log that shows all of that kind of info plus more.
Has the person that copied the data to the server and left it there been fired yet? He should be for not creating a protected share folder used to copy sensitive data like that.

My guess JustinL - you are most likely out of luck. Unless you have access and have configured your network to log changes as Sterling has noted you are out of luck. Unless, the document in question had revision protection enabled, but it sounds doubtful.

You can see the name of the last user who opened it - if the file is not read only - by sending it to Notepad.
