I got WIN98SE, it wouldnt install over Win95 OSR2 (I didnt get the upgrade edition), so I formatted my c drive (format c: /s).
I had to install some of my old drivers (because either win98 didnt have it or it didnt work right with my hardware). I pretty much have it all done except my internal Com port is somehow COM5 now (used to be COM2) and I dont even see that in the system settings from control panel (only com 1, 2, and 3or4..I forgot). But thats not really a big deal, however now my sleep button wont work. I have 2: one on my case and one on an usb device that includes other nifty buttons to start progs easier. The USB device is DEFINITELY working, because I can use some of the features on it. My APM is enabled and functioning (it will auto powerdown in the specified time). So what I really want to know is do I need to install a driver for the sleep button to work or what? And if so, how would I go about locating it. (I have all the CD's that came w/ comp, but I have no idea which directory contains the sleep stuff.)
P.S. dont tell me to call my manufacturer cuz its past the 1yr warranty stage.
P.P.S. The time you spent reading this, you could have rebooted your computer like 8 times http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

About installing old 95 drivers with 98SE...Try not to, if at all possible. Go to the manufacturer's site of all your devices and download and install all the latest drives.

The sleep button on the case is controled by the system Bios. Recheck your Bios options for the relative setting.

Having both the Bios and Win98SE controlling suspend functions can result in misbehavior. If the USB device adds another hardware suspend function, this may compound the problem. As an example, having the system Bios, Win98 and the monitor itself control the monitors suspend state, will lead to pronblems.

An updated driver/soft from the manufacturer of the USB device may help.

A system Bios update may also help.

There is an utility on the Win98 CD called PMTshoot in \tools\mtsutil\pmtshoot. This is a snip from the readme:

"PMTShoot is a tool to assist you in identifying the application or device driver that prevents your computer from entering its standby (or suspended) state."

I've never used it myself but it may aid you in isolating the problem.

You may need to enable ACPI support.
Search for "How to enable ACPI support in Windows 98" on MS site.
