For some reason I am no longer able to play quake on my computer. The reason I am posting here is because it is affecting other areas as well, but to a much lesser extent. When I have quake installed and load it the system hangs just after it says initialising sound and the hd is lit. The same problem occured with HalfLife.

I have:
txpro2 mb
western digital hd 2.1 gig with 3 partitions
win98

I formatted c: and reinstalled and the same thing happened.

Any idea what is going on?

Regards.

couple questions to get us going here....
1. did you possibly change anything from slots with cards, memory, cpu, bios settings,etc....
2.was this an instant occurance...or did it happen after a clean format?
3. do you have a good cpu fan thats running properly?
4. make sure that you have suffient cooling around the case as well.

Hi guys,

Thanks for replying.

I figured it out. One thing I neglected to mention in my first post is that I installed a new cdrom drive. The reason I didn't mention it is because it seemed to be working fine. It occurred to me that the programs that were stalling the computer were doing so at about the time when they would be looking to see if I had an audio cd in the drive to play. To test this all I had to do was load up windows cd player and everything came to a halt. The cd is a diamond data 40x. I tried it as primary and secondary master, slave and cable select, but it is stuffed. I went to driverguide.com but there are no drivers for it as it is an ATAPI thingy interface. I am taking it back tomorrow so I will let you know (that is if you care) if I just got a dud or what.

Regards.
