I can purchase the radeon 9600xt (128DDR) for $100 (after rebate) or the Geforce 6800 (128DDR) for $200 (after rebate).
Is the Geforce 6800 std performance worth the extra $100 dollars. I purchased both cards and wish to take one of them back.
My board only supports up to 4x agp. I presently have 1 gig DDr 266 ram on board and AMD Athlon XP 2400+ cpu. Present video card is Geforce4Ti4200.

Your cpu might be a little underpowered for the 6800, but it should still kick the bejesus out of a 9600.

One of the reasons that I considered sticking with the 9600XT was that I feared that my system was too under powered for the the 6800.

That doesn't mean that it won't run though.
With that $200 however, a 9800pro/xt might be worth a look, especially for games based on half-life 2's 'Source' game engine.

Actually, the 6800 non-ultra still surpasses the 9800 pro/xt models by quite a good margin. The 6800 is newer architecture and is quite a bit more powerful than the top of the line older generation cards. I know the FX series sucked, but the 6800 series and the 6600 GT Nvidia cards kill older generation cards. I would go with the 6800 or 6600 GT if you're looking for a card around $200. They love DX9 games like HL2. :D

HL2 still performs a bit better with an ATI card, and its quite likely that the Source game engine will be licensed more than the D3 one. However, they will both be fine for most modern stuff.

Since when is the 6800NU a $200 card? That is a ~$300 card.
Where are you getting the sweet deal?

just because the source is licensed to a company for the game doesn’t mean its going to run better, if NVIDIA Buy the right to have there "the way its meant to be played" on that game it will optimized to run that game better than ATI or who ever else uses the logo in there game. Now consider this, NVIDIA’s 6600 Beats 9800Pro and the 9800XT on 3dMark05 and 03 and Aqua mark and Sandra soft so don’t go telling people that 9800Pro will run current games better. That’s wrong information you’re giving people, it runs HL2 better but only by %3 but if you run the game on 1280X1024 they are neck and neck in HL2

My fault. I know I said that the 6800 NU sold for $200. That is not true. However, the 6600 GT, which performs almost exactly the same as the 6800 NU. Just go with the 6600 GT.

Well, I finally purchased the 6800nu for $200 after rebate. The prices have come down. Bestbuy offered the BFG 680nu oc bundled with HL2 and Farcry for $250 after rebate this week. I got the PNY 6800 last week for $200 after rebate. There are some good deals on line.
I was able to voltage mod and unlock the 4 extra pipelines (16 from12) and 1 extra vertex processor. I went from 325 to 420 on the core gpu clock and to 1.5v. My mem. clock is only stable at 783 from 700. My 3dmark03 scores are about 10,000. Totally stable with no artifacts. Some people can clock the the mem. to 900 and get scores over over 11,000.
Thats pretty good for this $200 card. I'm happy.

And, I must also mention that since my cpu and chipset are underpowering this video card, my benchmarks would be alot higher with a faster system.

I seconds what Madpistol stated..but if you already got the card( 6800 ) then never mind.
The 6800 is still a heckava card..and will literally kick the daylights out of the 9600XT. Yes, It is worth the extra$
For $200.00 the 6600GT is the best card made right now hands down...check on what it does and has for ram and bus speeds and also benchmarks.....;)
I am so jealous of all you guys right now
if i could pawn my card i have now( FX5900) I would get the 6600GT or the 6800GT.;)

The 660gt is a smokin deal for sure with core clock =500, DDR3mem=1000 stock for about $230. I might bring my card back and go for it. I hate to let mine go. I got a nice overclock going, 420\890, 16 pipes, 6 vertex shaders, totally stable.
But, that's top end for this card even lucking out. 50% of the time, you can't soft mod to 16 pipelines, due to defective stock.

Keep your card...its good enough...
There is and always will be better ...but like i said,if you have any next generation VC ....count your blessings and be happy . They will run everything out there with high resolution and great graphics...
The 6600 only has 8 pipelines also..so no matter what speed it plays or the benchmarks..they still miss all that glory just a tad bit.
12 pipelines,overclocking and a mod for 16 PL's means it is a great card.....:x  ;)
