Running Half-Life 2 without steam

This can be done right? I had found instructions on doing this but after following every step exactly it still wants to use steam reporting that the local steam service isn't running. I guess it isn't that big of a thing though. I already backed up the play disc so that I can play without pulling the original out every time (I want to preserve it a bit) but steam is really a pain in the ****.

You just have to have steam open not connected though....then play offline. i think......well thats what im doing.....i hope.

Yup, thats right.

Yeah, if you just disable your internet connection and try and start half-life 2, you will see some message from steam about playing in Offline Mode. This is the best you can do. You can't run HL2 totally without steam.
