Hey,

Im running a Pentium III 550Mhz, with 256MB RAM, and a Quantum Atlas 18.2GB 10,000RPM Hard drive..

Whenever I start up the computer, it will go to the Windows logo screen, then sit for about 30 seconds, then the bottom part (where the wave of bright blue and darker blue go) goes black, and sits there for about 80 seconds... Somehow, I think this takes a little too long, because every other computer I've seen does NOT take this long!

Anyone have a solution?

It's redetecting something or running a virus scan??...what else is in the system?

It could be a network card attempting to get an IP address. Does the machine have any network card(s) in it? If so, you may want to hard code the IP address it is using instead of letting windows "obtain IP address automatically". I've noticed some fairly long slowdowns caused by this sort of thing before, but this does seem a bit longer than I'm used to. Itt worth a look though. If you need any more info, just ask.

I have noticed the same things happen to mine. I generally cure it by replacing Windows with a fresh install copy. I run a P3 450 at 558, and Ive seen the startups from less than 45seconds to over 2 minutes.

I've tried all kinds of things to fix this and finally would find another reason to replace windows before ever succeeding.

Maybe someone else can help!

Agreed - A fresh install is great.

My computer does the same thing. Mine slow startup is Norton's Dos Virus Scan runs before windows loads. Check your autoexec.bat and config.sys files for programs that load on startup. Alot of slow boots are caused by virus software being loaded from the autoexec.bat.

Try 'rem' ing out the virus program lines and see if theres a change.

yep to 800XL. My computer took forever to boot until I assigned it an IP address. (I have a (NIC). If you have a NIC, assign it an IP address instead of autodetect

I must be a TweakUI nut lol. You can disengage/modify startups there too, as well as run/msconfig.

Thanks!

I've reinstalled Windows, and now it seems to go a bit faster, but I have Norton Anti-Virus checking it, so Im very sure thats the problem... Any way to have it NOT check at startup?

Thanx

Ok..open Nortons up..go to options, then go to the 'startup' tab..and unchcek everything.
Simple as pi. I havent had any of these problem (with the blue bar goin black or anything) evben with all the boot options on in nortons, so the hang's in your bootup arent caused by just nortons scanning stuff

I am with you Socalgal, I like Tweak UI too.

Brandon just go to the boot tab of Tweak UI and uncheck, Show splash screen.. That helps a lot.
