This is really annoying. Bought 2 copies. One through steam and another through eb. I first ordered through steam but realized I wouldn't have a box. anyways.. The reason that half-life 2 sucks is...
DOESN"T WORK!!!! GRRRRRRRR It does exactly what my source does. Starts to load up the without an error pops right back to the desktop with the wall paper missing. I'm sooo mad. Waited all this time for a 75% working game.. :r :r :r :r :r

Sorry it isn't working for you, its been working flawlessly for me. If you had the error in CS: S (i'm assuming this is what you mean when you say 'it does exactly what my source does') then perhaps the problem is not the game, but something on your computer.
That being said, there is a HL2 error thread on the planet half life forums that discusses this issue:
http://www.forumplanet.com/planethalflife/topic.asp?fid=6549&tid=1529260&p=1
At this point, if you can rule out the problem being on your computer, i'd just report the bug to valve like they want you to.

Installation is a pain with this game, a real pain. As someone who isn't a fan of Newell I still have to say this is a bloody good game and worth time to troubleshoot for a few days. If you can't get it by then, then I'd return it. If you ever want it later it'll still be on the shelves and they'll be a series of patches, updates, or whatever they want to call them for it which will probably remedy the situation along with a well functioning installer shipped with the game. This game could have used a little more QA time IMO, especially when the INSTALLER doesn't work right. Still, I'd look around and see if the situation is fixable.

Re-install your OS.

I honestly have to agree with you on this one, if its having a problem with CS.s too. Ive have some problems with BF1942 and BF V to the point where I just reinstalled my OS and all was good.

I'm very close to that point. I have a hidden process that nothing is finding except windows on the login screen if it kicked me back to it or if I'm running an install of drivers and it reboots. A window called shouldn't see me pops up for a second before being killed and windows shutting down. I've scanned with everything I have and can't find anything and my firewall isn't reporting any suspicious trying to go out, but I've had problems with drivers ever since - and not easy ones, but ones which require a hard reboot.

Ok, at first when I read this post I was like, "meh. . .this guy is unlucky." But now I'm on my 3rd attempt to install this game. Keep on getting read errors from the CD. First time it failed on CD 4 because it complained about it couldn't find the desktop Icon to put on my desktop in the cabinet file. . .then second try it complained about some other random file on CD 2! I'm about to start the installer for the 3rd time. Is there something about Plextor CD/DVD combo drives? It never gave me any problem with any other game except Far Cry. This is soooo f'ing GHEY! I come home from work all excited with my new game all ready to chill and relax with the game I spent almost $60 on and now this $h1T!?? Thanks, VALVE! You've really kicked my weekend off right!! A$$HOLES!

And another thing. . .You'd think for almost $60 they could give you some friggin JEWEL CASES and a decent cover for these CD's rather than these crappy paper sleeves. . .BUT NO! LET'S JUST SHOVE IT OUT THE DOOR AS FAST AS WE CAN! QUANTITY OVER QUALITY! PATCH IT LATER! GOD!!!! CAN YOU TELL I'M PISSED!!??

Don't try to bypass the filter
If you are getting read errors, and you say its happened with far cry as well, i'd try using a different optical drive, if you dont' have a spare, i'm sure one would be easy enough to find.
Another thing you can try is to register the CD key under steam's "browse games"...then you should be able to just download the game off steam...i haven't done this, but it seems as though it should work.

Unless he is on dialup.
First off, install both CS:Source and HL2:Source. If you don't install CS:Source, the installation will hang.
I did get a bad CD my first go around after inspecting all of them, one was clearly bad (enough that I opened the exchange in the store in front of someone who knew what bad CD's looked like), the second time it was just my lack of installing CS:Source that caused the 4th CD hang issue.
I've only seen humidity/air trapped in cheap CD-R's in the past, never on new stamped CD's. Remember they did a full run and are on their second run, so quality control may not have been as tight, especially since Vivendi isn't getting as much as it wants thanks to steam.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing about the jewel cases.

"quantity over quality"
Who really cares if the game has a jewel case? Its obvious they had to make hundreds of thousands of CDs too...If you want a jewel case, just put it in one, everyone has them lying around...of course, there will still be some people who will criticize a game for something as insignificant as a jewel case, even if the game is one of the best FPS of all time.

In addition, why would one blame Valve for something Vivendi did, which Valve had no control over?

Well, I've calmed down somewhat now. It finally installed. Apparently what somebody else said above about installing both CS: Source and Half life was the problem. You must install both! If you opt not to install CS source, the install fails with seemingly random odd read errors or missing file errors. Sure it gives you the option not to install CS, but if you use it, the install fails. Way to go guys! I quit playin CS years ago because I got sick of it because everybody cheated. Now they are forcing me to put it back on my machine . . .Well, I just uninstalled it afterward so no biggie but come on!! It's called QUALITY ASSURANCE! They should try it. And I don't care who is responsible for not putting the 5 cd's in jewel cases. Somebody should have if they are gonna charge near $60 for this little gem. They should give you something better than paper sleeves to protect your investment. And why is it I have to pay $80 if I wanna get this game on ONE DVD instead of 5 frickin cd's?! That don't make a lick o' sense! But anyway, all rants aside, now that it is installed and working. . .AWESOME GAME!

No one ever blamed valve for the jewel cases. We simply stated that it would have been nice to get a jewel case for a $60 game.
