No, I am not going to post the specs for some "dream machine" just for bragging rights. This is my rig. . .getting a little bit dated maybe but still held up ok for Doom III (big disappointment that it was).
P4 2.53 GHz, 533 FSB
1 Gig PC 2700 DDR SDRAM.
Gainward GeForce FX 5900XT (Golden Sample) w/ 128MB, 8x AGP.
ABit SR7-8X Motherboard.
Anybody running HL2 on a similar system? How is it? Silky smooth or slide show?
Thanks!

dell8200 is right, you should have no problem running HL2. Keep in mind that you will be running in dx8.1 mode, however, so things like water won't look as pretty as they could unless you force your card to run in dx9 mode ( I believe there are tweaks to do this ), but then expect a performance drop.
I'm predicting you can run at 1024, medium settings.

:)
average systems will get average performance...above average systems will get above average performance, isn't that how it always goes? :D

I actually am not looking for predictions, although I do thank those who took the time to read and reply to my post. I am looking for other people running HL 2 on a machine with similar specs. I want to know how it is doing for them. I wasn't looking for best guesses. Moot point anyway now since I went out today and bought the game. Guess I'll find out for myself tonight :)

Sadly that is going to be hard to find here as most who had FX cards have gotten rid of them for either ATi's offering of then or nvidia's/ati's current offering. The 5900 was a card that shouldn't have been made - and forced D8.1 pathways show that. It'll run everything great and your FPS should be just fine. But you won't get the little extras - which if you have a functioning card that will still run games just fine, you shouldn't pay out for another one.
If you need to know, try ocforums.com, audio/video, nvidia and look around there. Also could try their games section, they may have a thread with what everyone's running and how it is running (seems to be a trend there). Your not going to be skipping along below 30 for sure, it runs on G2's decently and your way above that.
It does an autodetect the first time. Run it that way once with FRAPS (if you have an old version, get a newer one - my old version has problems staying up, the newr one doesn't for some reason - though it may be isolated as my comp is on the border of a complete reformat and reinstall with all the drivers that have run through it recently). It should be 30 and higher through the whole game. If it's higher than what you need frame wise, or still feels smooth anyhow, then up a setting or two. Run again until you reach a point that you can't push anymore. Probably will be running 45 or higher I'd GUESS since it is running D8.1 which is your card's strong point. You won't miss any of the actual gameplay or storyline - just a bit of eyecandy.
