I have an Abit AX5 that has just started giving me problems. It will only detect the first drive (CDROM) on the ribbon cable. The last drive on the cable will not be detected.
I have swapped both drives with the same results. And yes the master/slave jumpers are set correctly. No matter wich drive is using the first plug on the cable, that is the drive that is detected. I have also swapped out the cable, no help.
My setup IDE-1- HD, IDE-2- master CD, slave CDRW. Is there a setting in the BIOS that would disable the Slave function? I have looked but nothing has jumped out at me.
Thanks for your time.........

UpGrd,

I have found thru experiance that the best way to setup a system that is going to have a CD Burner in it is

IDE 1 MASTER= Harddrive
IDE 1 Slave = "source cd" (non burner)

IDE 2 Master = CD burner
IDE 2 Slave = 2nd Harddrive

I have had a couple of IDE burners and the above setup is what I had to use to have the system work with BOTH cd's in them...When I had them setup like you have tried (both on same IDE channel) it would only "find" one of them. Hope this helps

..Would that make your CD burner skip for a brief second when the second harddrive is accessed (mistakenly or during some periodic run) since IDE cables can only access one of the 2 devices on the cable at a time?? I have 2 HD's on first IDE ribbon and cd main on second master and CD-r on Second slave..Cuz i hardly ever use the second master (Tray loaders are a pain...)
