Windows 95/98 won't install in upgraded PC that previously had Win 3.1. ... I installed new Asus mobo, in old desktop that had Win 3.1. 3.1 was still working after installing new mobo. I formatted the HD and have been trying to install both Win 95 & 98. Installation begins but then a small black box comes on the screen and halts the install. I upgraded the BIOS, but nothing changed. Is the problem in the BIOS or something still on the HDD? Any suggestions?

Do you have the antivirus disabled in the boards bios? What does the black box say?

The black box doesn't say anything. It looks like a big piece of black tape. On Win 95, it installs as far as the license agreement. After I click on "agree", the next screen shows the black box and then everything stops. It doesn't lock down completely. I can still reset or ctrl/alt/del.
I don't know about the anti-virus, but I'll check on that... but, does it sound like it's a BIOS problem?

Perhaps you are trying to install an upgrade version that is looking for the 3.1 that was lost when you reformatted the HDD.

Upgrade version doesn't lock up when installed to empty drive, it just prompts you for the previous version. With W95, you insert disk 1 of W3.x, then proceed. With '98, you need entire set of W3.x or W95 CD. But neither does what Callas is getting.

Think a little more system info needed here.

I agree with magk9. Disable virus protection in the bios and see what happens. I had a very similiar problem installing 95 on one of my machines.

Also,..I've had to drop the H.D.-PIO mode to 3 on quite a few systems too, to get thru' the setup without errors!! Never saw the black box you're getting, but try it if you need to!!

Okay guys... you came through again. Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but I had other projects taking priority to this problem.
... I went into the BIOS and disabled the anti-virus, and wham bam. No more black box. No more lockup. Win95 went in pretty as you please.
... Thank you, thank you, thank you. Not just the anti-virus submitters... everyone that offered some help. That's what brain thrusting is all about.
