Is there a way around this. I have systems on a novell network that need to join a win2003 domain. However when I add the domain to the user then a new user is created such as Joe becomes Joe.000 and all his personal settings are gone? is there a way around this other than making a copy of all the profile files from Joe to Joe.000

forgot to say windows xp machine sp1 (can't use sp2 yet for conflicts)

I had similar issues. I copy from the original folder to the new folder. I do not think there is a way around your problem because changing domains causes XP to use a new SID for the user logging on. I think this behavior is by design.

do I need to worry about not copying the ntuser.dat, ntuser.dat.log and ntuser.ini

If not I'll copy the whole documents and settings/username to username.000

bummer

I log onto the machine as the local administrator.

I copy the entire profile - NTUSER.DAT and all files. I tend to delete cokkies and temp files befopre the copy.

Sometimes the copy will mess up and a third profile gets created (agagin due to the SID stored in the NTUSSER.DAT). If this is the case you simply need to delete the folder for the unused profiles once you get one to work properly.

We do this because we use AutoCAD and our users complained that when we replaced their systems they had to customize everything again.

There is no way around it, but there is an easier way. Once the second profile has been created, log in as administrator.

Rename the new profile joe.000.new

then rename the old profile joe.000, just like the new one was.

Then log back in as Joe, and you should see all of his settings.

The key is to make sure you name the old profile exactly how the new profile is shown.

I didn't know that would work. I will try that next time I replace a PC for a user.

I tried the rename but that does not work.
I believe its because there is no windows domain info in the first
profile.

Joe has a novell account
I add joe to a windows domain (which is new)
Joe.000 is created

If I rename joe.000 and Joe as per this thread to joe.000.new and joe.000 . then upon reboot a new joe profile is created and I have three. I tried to rename again just in case I had made an error and I get a joe.domain profile. I think when it finds the novell profile w/o win domain. it decides to create another windows (SID) again.

Let me know what you think

after copying the profile from old to new I still have to setup email settings. why doesn't this transfer?

Can you still log on to the machine under the old username? If so, run the files and settings transfer wizard and get it to put it into a sibgle file on the computer. Then run it again from the new user and extract it from the file created earlier. Otherwise, I have just copied the entire contents of the profile folder over to the new one. You'll still have to re-set up things like user prefs though this way, and e-mail/internet settings etc.

It is behavior by design though, although it can be really annoying in certain situations.

do I need to transfer the above files?

You do not need to transfer those files. That are simply logs specific to each file. They will be created as changes are made to the files in the new profile.
