Hello all,

I have DSL and wish to connect it so that I can use two PC's on the internet at once. So, I bought some stuff for a wireless network and have had some issues...

Specifically, I have a D-Link DI-524 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=316) wireless router. As per the instructions, I have followed the steps but get no connection/internet on even the primary PC.

After downloading all updates, (XP SP2, firmware, etc.), I think I have pinpointed the issue.

According to the install guide, I need to have my DSL modem powered off and my D-Link powered on. Then, I must plug in an ethernet cable, (it says cross-over OR passthrough), power on the DSL modem. Then, after my DSL modem says it's "ready", I plug in the ethernet cable to the port entitle "WAN". Once I do this, the WAN led should illuminate on the router. It doesn't.

So, software issues aside, I think there's something happening here which is blocking me. As I mentioned, I have all firmware updates. Also, I have tried several ethernet cable, including the one provided with the router, to no avail. Lastly, darn near every time I try hooking everything up, I reset the router with a paperclip.

I am plum out of ideas and am 100% positive I have hooked everything up correctly.

Any thoughts? I am tempted to call in the "Geeks on Call" and just sit back and watch.

Thanks!

Holy ****.....

I finally got someone who knew what they were doing. As a result, I have a wireless network. The email I received, which differed VERY much from the previous email a rep sent me, says:

It seems that there is an issue of speed negotiation between the router and the
modem.
Please lock down the speed of DI-524 to 10 Mbps or 100Mbps.

To lock the speed to 10Mbps or 100Mbps get into the web configuration of the
router and go to Tools -> Misc tab and select WAN port speed. Afterwards apply
the settings and reboot the router.

Now configure the router for internet connection: -

The following FAQ is for most DSL connections using PPPoE such as Ameritech,
BellSouth, Earthlink, Mindspring, PacBell, SBC Global (Yahoo), Verizon (East
Coast), and Frontier.

PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) is most commonly used in the
United States.

Please refer to http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=997 for complete
FAQ.

Note: You can only use the Ethernet port on your DSL modem. If you were using
the USB connection before using the router, then you must turn off your modem,
disconnect the USB cable and connect an Ethernet cable to the WAN port on the
router, and then turn the modem back on. In some cases, you may need to call
your ISP to change connection types (USB to Ethernet).

Step 1 Make sure you disable any PPPoE software such as WinPoet or Enternet 300
from your computer or you will not be able to connect to the Internet (or the
router).

* SBC Global users must disable ALL of the Yahoo software that came with your
DSL package.

Step 2 Open your web browser and enter the IP address of your router
(192.168.0.1). Enter username (admin) and your password (leave blank).

Note: Do NOT run the Wizard.

Step 3 Click on WAN on left-hand side of the screen. Select PPPoE.

Step 4 Select Dynamic PPPoE (unless your ISP supplied you with a static IP
address).

Step 5 In the username field enter your username (IE username@yourisp.net) and
your password.

* Some Earthlink users may need to enter ELN/ before their username (IE
ELN/username@earthlink.net).

Step 6 Maximum Idle Time should be set to zero. Set MTU to 1492, unless
specified by your ISP, and set Autoreconnect to Enabled.

Note: If you experience problems accessing certain secure websites and/or email
issues, please set the MTU to a lower number such as 1472, 1452, etc. Contact
your ISP for more information and the proper MTU setting for your connection.

Step 7 Click Apply. When prompted, click Continue. Once the screen refreshes,
unplug the power to the D-Link router.

Step 8 Turn off your DSL modem for 2-3 minutes. Turn back on. Once the modem has
established a link to your ISP, plug the power back into the D-Link router. Wait
about 30 seconds and log back into the router.

Step 9 Click on the Status tab in the web configuration where you can view the
device info. Under WAN, click Connect. Click Continue when prompted. You should
now see that the device info will show an IP address, verifying that the device
has connected to a server and has been assigned an IP address.

That was it. Nothing more than that. Before, the email I received simply said something like see our FAQ's. I guess it pays to be persistent!

Good luck to anyone else who may share the same problem!

Try plugging your modem into one of the ethernet slots 1 thru 4 instead of the WAN port. Works for me on my hardwire/wireless setup, all D-link.
