Check that the nozzle is clean. Epsons tend to clog.

I had the same problem with my 600
The black was not empty but it faded away to nothing . After many attempts to clean the nozzle with no result I put a new cartridge
in and it worked perfectly .
NOTE:
Most epsons won't let you take the cartridge out before it is empty .
I overcame that by switching the printer off
and turning the cartridge drive belt by hand
at the same time helping the cartridge along (lifting the front)with my other hand .
"BE EXTEMELY GENTLE AND DON'T FORCE IT TOO HARD AS YOU CAN CAUSE IRREPAIRABLE DAMAGE".

Yeah, Epson syndrome. Don't let the printer sit for weeks w/o using or cleaning the nozzles. Also be REAL careful when you peel back the seal on top of the cartridge. This is the vent, and if you expose too much vent it'll clog BAD in a heartbeat.
