Can I buy a replacement graphics card for £35 and retire my Voodoo 3 3000 or isn't it worth it and just keep my Voodoo and the 35 bob.

I don't want a second mortgage for a graphics card.

you should be able to pick up a GF4Ti4x00 for around £50, but in reality if the rest of your system is as old as that card, there isn't much point - better keeping the money burning the hole in your pocket if the card works.

My system has been evolving since 2000. It currently runs a AMD athlon 2400Xp, 80 Gb Maxtor Hard drive, 384 Mb DDR PC2100, SB LIve PCI card as I hate the onboard sound.
And the OS is windows XP.

So its only the graphics card that has been with me for three years and it just does not run modern games well.

You should see quite a bit of an improvement with a GF4 series card.

That system is still pretty descent. A GF4 will be perfect for it. :t

GForce 4 you recommend, any brand to consider, any brand to avoid? And also is that new or would you say get it second hand through ebay.

Oh I reread the thread a GF4 4200 or 4800 can only be got through the second hand market. I rember these being the top cards a couple of years ago.

As the saying goes

"Only in America!"

Prices in the states are also much cheaper than backward UK.

Not strictly true, there are plenty of GF4's about for sale fairly cheaply, try http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components/graphicscards/productView.htm?quicklinx=3HTS on for size :)

A Geforce 4Ti4400/4600 would suit your system brilliantly, I ran a GF4Ti4400 in a 1.4Tbird for 2 years and have only just upgraded but am still using the same g'card - it still plays games well enough for me :)

Try looking for Gainward Golden Samples, they sold cards that were garunteed for mild overclocking due to the "premium" components they put in there systems and the fact they tweaked the reference design to suit, result was they sweeped the board in the relevant classes back in the day.

I think I would be better off with the second hand market as I can pick up a 4800 for the same price. This is a poweful card but has been poo - pooed just becuase of not fully supporting direct x 9. I rarely play new games being such an eberneezer (see my system to prove this) so this would be an ideal card. I did not realise they had come down in price so much.

Thanks for you advice it has been appreciated.

I do mainly use ebuyer for ordering stuff. They offer the most competitive prices compared with others such as simply, dabs, watford.
