does it use Xfree86 or Xorg?

Have you done a XFree86 --configure (might be just -configure) yet?

Also, how are you trying to start x? just with startx?

try switching to whichever screen X usually resides on, (F7 or F8 on slackware, I don't know about fedora), check there isn't already an X server running.

Yes, but how are you trying to start it, is it Xfree86 or Xorg, and is it properly configured for your system/video card?
