Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : IDE controller conflicts
I have win 95A, from what I understand it is the most unstable version out.
My problem is that my CDrom keeps dissappearing, not recognized by win 95 but it is recognised in the boot up. I am showing conflicts in the device manager. Is there a web page where I can download better IDE controller drivers? I am using the "standard dual PCI IDE controller" now. If I try to remove the driver my whole system locks up.So I will try to load another driver if I can find one to download. If my cdrom was working, I would try to load them from my win 95 disk.I will go to win 98 but I need the driver first to get the CDRom working. Catch 22 I guess. Any suggestions.?

Well, first of all, you should try running MSCDEX.EXE through your system and see if that makes a difference, it should get the cd-rom loading properly. To find out more about it, just e-mail me and I'll help you with the problem, or contact me via ICQ #15184216

NO BS, you may have been infected with a boot sector virus.
You need to tell us about your motherboard?? Is it new? Did it work before? What kind of chipset does it have?
You can get updated Intel drivers here: developer.intel.com/design/chipsets/drivers/busmastr (http://developer.intel.com/design/chipsets/drivers/busmastr)
Do you have current antivirus software?
Try this, it may help if you have a boot sector virus:
First created a startup disk - note, the boot sector of this disk will become infected too if you have a virus:
Next, boot with the disk and type in fdisk /mbr at the prompt and press enter, after that transfer the system files off the disk to C: drive using the sys c: command,
Now, remove the startup disk and do a reboot by pressing the reset button..
IF you are lucky you will get a temporary reprieve from the virus and the conflicts will be gone - but you will need to get some good antivirus software right away.

I agree with CMonster-
Definitely sounds like you have a virus.
Download a trial from www.avp.com (http://www.avp.com) , preferably the DOS version. Run it from DOS, FDisk /MBR right after and reboot.

CHC - "not sure" is a good way to describe what you said, because many boot sector virus cause exactly that, a yellow exclaimation mark in the device manager under the IDE controlers and the CDROM drive disappears from Windows.
In fact, in the "Performance" tab of the "System Properties" sheet, Windows may even display a message suggesting the possibility of a boot sector virus .

No go CMonster, did what you said, stillhad conflicts and no CDRom. Fasr Eddie had the right idea, there was a "noide" entry in the regestry, deleted it and rebooted, got my cdrom back, problem comes back every couple of boot ups, will try avp anti virus and go to win98 very soon . Will let you all know how it goes.
Thanks GPo

Not sure that this does sound like a virus. If you are experiencing conflicts in your IDE drivers in device manager, that is probably indicative of the reason CDR is not working. Have you tried booting in safe mode? Does the CDR show up in safe mode?
In device manager, which devices and resources show up as having conflicts?
BTW, anything Microsoft creates is pretty buggy, 95a is not necessarily unusually unstable.
