I have not been able to get pwr. man. to work correctly in win98 & 95. I have a mcase mid tower case, and bx6 mb. I believe the problem lies between the 2. My hard drives shut down completely anywhere between 5 and 15 mins after starting windows causing the system to freeze when the hd's are accessed again. This hapens whether I'm using the bios pwr. man. or the operating system pwr. man. Manufactures blame each other.

All Power Management is controlled by APM. Going to Power Management Feature in the BIOS make sure settings are as follows:

PM = User Define
PM Controlled by APM = No

Disable: HDD, Doze, Standby, Suspend.

It does sound like there is something else going on there, as your system should not be crashing when resuming hdd activity. Sorry, I don't have the knowledge for what could be causing that one.

I had to read your post a couple dozen times before I fully understood the problem. My computer K6-2/333 with 2 HD 1-3.2GB as FAT32 and the 2-410MB as FAT16. Everytime the system shut down the drives I had the same problem as you until I went out and got a 540MB as FAT32 in place of the 410MB and now it works fine. The 540MB seems small but I use it as a backup for internet downloaded files.

If you have different FAT drives on your computer the windows on restarting the drives can't see them as being two different Fat tables and subsequently locks up.

If you have a similar setup try disconnecting the smaller drive and the condition will go away.

I have a 4.3 and a 3.2 gig quantum hardrive. Maybe the problem is because they are partitioned into 4 drives total ( 3 2g. parts. and 1 1g. part.) . Anyway thanks again.

Dragonfly,

I think I read a post somewhere about the quantum drives not being able to support the power management well. In your case I would try a different manufacture drive and see if it still occurrs or if you can diconnect one of them and still have your system boot, it maybe that you have the 2 drives. I've personally done away with the use of the APM. The monitor shut-down and/or screen saver works fine enough for me.
