So, I was wondering if I could use a wireless access point as a wireless receiver for my desktop. Is this possible?

What you call Receiver is referred to as a Wireless Client Card.

There are few Access Points that can be configured as Clients (D-Link, and Linksys make them). Read the specs of the Access Points and make sure that they mention Client Mode.

They might also be called ethernet bridge however that is the name usually given to dedicated workgroup bridges in the SOHO community. Either way, many or even most AP's will have this mode. Some won't though so just check the specs.

I know what it is referred to as but to limit the possible confusion i just called it a receiver instead of a client card since it isn't going to be a card.

Thanks Cat5e.
