Can anyone share the symptoms that you experienced when using an inappropriate power supply? Have narrowed my problem down to a couple of things but thought I'd pick your brains as well. Anything like the computer booting normally intermittently or unable to reset CMOS via jumper? I am trying to run a Soyo SY6BB with a 300a running at 450 (got it from STEP Thermodynamics) with 128 PC133 ram (also from STEP). My AT power supply is app. 3.5 years old and of unknown wattage. Have tried differant video cards, hard drives, ram and CPU - none work. System powers up but video does not initialize. Keyboard lights come on but that is it. One long beep followed by 'French Police Siren' and that's all she'll do. Have tried all components in other motherboard and all work fine. Even insulated the case standoffs with electrical tape in case of a short. Still nothing. Have re-seated ram and put it in differant slots. Have gone through all of the usual procedures in these cases to no avail. Sent original Soyo board back as well as the STEP products, thinking it was one of them. STEP stuff was fine but don't know result of the mobo. To me, either the board/bios chip is bad again( I think it unlikely...) or the power supply is somehow to blame. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED...

Hmmmm...I had a 220 only power supply, it fried a 486. I had an ATX PS die, but my only symtoms were that it would not start one day. I had a 220W burn itself out from running only a CPU, mobo, video, and disket.

Here's one I ran into today...

It's an ATX: Push the power button, system tries to start, but before it has a chance to do a POST, it restarts itself. Around and Around. And - the rocker switch in the back of the system is completely unusuable - it does not shut the system off. The only way to cut the power was to unplug.

By the way, this system worked fine yesterday. When I replaced the PS, all is well. Who can figure??

BTW...I was real glad when the new PS worked out, so I didn't have to replace the MB. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

French Police Siren

I've heard that when there is no memory present as well as having a short in the system somewhere.
