I am VERY dissappointed with my Hewlett Packard 8100i CD-RW drive. I want to take it back to the place that I bought it from and replace it with a Yamaha CD-RW drive, but the technician there, said he won't take it back, unless there is something wrong with it. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif I don't think that it is defective, so chances are, it just doesn't work with my Compaq PC. If that's the case, then I'm REALLY screwed. The truth is, I REALLY regret buying this drive, and I would be very happy if I could replace it with the Yamaha. What I'm about to ask is really bad...but I am also REALLY desperate to get a different drive...Is there any way I could do something to the drive to make it look defective, so that the technician would take it back? I would really appreciate it if one of you could send me an email telling me how to do this....I know this is kinda wrong, but I REALLY HATE WHAT I BOUGHT!!!!!!! I don't think I would feel that guilty, 'cause this is a HUGE store, and it's not like they are loosing that much money over this...
Thanking you in Advance,

Intentionally damaging the drive is a real bad idea!
They've already seen it so would know something's up. Probably still wouldn't take it & you end up with bad unit. Better way to go is talk to store manager, explain that it's incompatable & that you aren't after refund, just different brand. Be sure it's in it's package with everything there & looks good, shouldn't have a problem.

BUT - before getting something else, make sure this one will do what you need! Store will not be tolerant of second return. Try to find someone with the same Compaq using this drive & get their opinion.

Then quit dealing with this store, name names, and post it here!
If you say things like, "In my opinion", and "I think", it's not slander or libel, and completely legal.

I never heard of a store that would not take something back as long as you had the receipt. Ask to talk to the manager as give a little attitude if needed. Its not like uyou want your money back eithier. Just an exchange for a different product for which you will pay the difference. Do not break the drive however as then you will be screwed as the store already saw the drive. Once you get what you want, dont shop there anymore.

Here's something you can try as long as the store return policy is still in effect and you have a reciept.

Does the drive say 100% IBM Compatible. Under the consumer rights laws there is a clause that basically states that if and item says its 100% IBM Compatible and it doesn't work on your PC then its considered Defective. Bring it back to the store and make this claim. Say its defective in not so many words and demand a refund or a different product that also may or may not work. Remember stores don't like it when their customers quote laws and rights of the consumer they will probably tell you to go to HE** if you quote a law. Play it cool and calmly request a refund or a product exchange.

If they still do not comply call the manufacture of the drive directly and state your problem. They will always be more than happy to help you out. They may even stop selling items to that store and also pick-up shipping to have the item returned. DON'T CALL THE HELP DESK it will get you no-where.

I hope I have been of some help and please don't damage the drive.

You can also bring up the issue with the Watch Dog in the "Maximum PC" publication if you get no results.

You are not the first nor the last person to complain of drive problems with the HP CD-R/RW's, I myself have tried to get them to work on different PC's. Believe me, they have serious compatibility problems.

I think Ed_s has the right idea. Just talk to the store manager. If he doesn't help then begin to climb the ladder of management until you get results.

Then once you do return it. Don't deal with them again. Look elsewhere for your new drive.
