Is it legal to have the cable co (say Cablevision) install Optimum
On Line and then use my own Router or Switch to use it with
more than one computer ?

Does the cable co have the right to charge for more than one
computer if they are not providing the Router or Switch ?

Can they tell if more than one computer is connected to the
same Cable Internet connection ?

If I have cable internet enabled at one address, and bring a
computer with correct cable software to another home in the
same service area (same cable company), will it work over there
or do they need to add or remove some sort of filter between
the cable box outside and the house ?

Thanks

You should be able to share the connection between multiple computers without raising too much of a stink. They might get a little touchy about it, but I doubt they will try to bill you extra. More importantly, why do they need to know. Its your right to install a router, beyond that, they won't be able to tell how many systems are behind it.

OK,

that's what I thought .. The router would be given the IP
address that the cable co provides, then two static ip's
from the router to the two computers

What about ordering service at one address & using a
computer with the correct cable software / ip at another
address in the same service / cable company area ?

Will it work ?

Thanks

The only way you will be able to use the internet in another location is if they have it turned on as well. Otherwise, they need to switch some things at the box for it to work, you can just plug in your modem, and go.

OK, so that means they either add or remove a filter
between the cable weatherhead and my home

Thanks much

In answer to your 2 questions.

You can use a router and switches to have multiple computers using the connection, I personally have 8 here on one comcast cable system.

As to whether you can use it somewhere else. It's not the software or IP address that determines your connection, it's the MAC address on the modem, so, theoretically, if you took your modem to someone elses house, you could connect there as long as they have the capability on their cable for internet.:t

Leprecaun,

Can the MAC Address on the modem be
changed ?

Would it be possible to buy another
modem, set it to the same MAC Address
and use it at another location on the
same cable system ?

Could both modems be used at the
same time or would one need to be
Off when the other is On ?

Thanks

NO, the MAC address is programmed in, you can't change it, kinda nullifies your other questions too, sorry:t

Some MAC addresses can be changed. It depends on the equipment. I can change the MAC address of some of my NIC's by using a flash utility supplied by the manufacturer. With a worldwode network we sometimes end up with duplicate MAC addresses which will kill one systems connection.

I doubt a cable modem has that ability.

It would be easier to have the other location subscribe to cable internet and just bring your system back and forth.
