I'm counting on all ya'll's wisdom out there. Somehow a file or setting on my main machine got corrupted, a file relating to TCP/IP socket usage. All of my Winsock programs now cannot open a network socket. However, TCP/IP networking itself works just fine considering that I can still use TCP/IP shares off my Linux server and ping every machine on my network.

This one has me baffled. I've replaced winsock.dll, wsock32.dll, wsock32n.dll, wsock.vxd, wsock2.vxd, and yet nothing has worked.

I had the same problem on a testbed, and I found that when I did a motherboard swap, the problem went away, making me think it was due to a file that got rewritten over during the swap. I'd swap motherboards on my main machine, but I really don't have one I want to swap to. /forum/smile.gif

If anyone can help, I'm all ears.

You might try this: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q230/2/43.ASP .

Or just go to Microsoft's advanced support search at: http://support.microsoft.com/support/search/c.asp?SPR= .

Thanks for the link. I had already searched the MS KB, but found nothing pertinant. The only real info I found was on Netscape's site (go figure), but it still didn't help.

The article had to be right on for me because I had installed WebTV and DirectX 7 on the same boot (naughty, naughty, I know..). However, I'm assuming that because of all the driver changes I did, those registry values were returned to normal. So no go there. I went ahead and replaced the wininet.dll file it referred to, but that didn't work either.

So, right now I decided to swap network cards in hopes that that would force the machine to reconfigure itself properly. However, that still didn't work.

BTW, just to be clear, my internet access is served through a Masquerading Linux box to my LAN where my client machines connect to the net through it as a gateway.

I'm going to try to install IE5 on it just in hopes that what should have caused the problem fixes it again. /forum/smile.gif

I'd love it if anyone has any more insight they'd like to share.

This is also exactly the problem I had when I tried to upgrade to WINSE without clean install. Tried more than 10x reinstalling WINSE, restore, reinstalling....the problem did not go away. I gave up and finally use the original Win98.

I do mind doing clean install from the beginning since my windows and each programs in there are highly customized, and thus could waste 2-3 days just for customizing.

Tried to consult many people, bbs, Microsoft knowledgabase, I found nothing helpful.
