"gold" means that the game CD has been signed off and the master sent to the copier. Essentially it means that the game is "finished" and that in a few weeks for the copying and distribution it will be in the shops.
In other words, the company have decided that they can't spend any more time testing and fixing the bugs in the code so release it to be sent out to the world knowing fine well they can work on and release a patch in time for the release into the shops. Cynic, me? Never!
