I have installed SP2 for my parents PC. Now, They can not connect to the internet with their IE browsew. They have Win XP Home Ed. I tried a Sys Restore, but it wouldn't do a restore.
All looks finel, in the ISP set up. When I Click to connect to their dial-up service I get all the modem chirps and the "Verifying Username and Password" and the "Registerying your'Whatever'". Windows shows a connection and the timer runs on how long the connection has existed, but the "This page cannot be displayed" error comes up everytime I click on the "blue E". Outlook Express can not retrieve or send mail, nor can "Updates" connect if I try the Update button on, say Norton AV.
Everything seems normal when connecting to their ISP, but no programs can make internet connections. Any ideas as to what may be my problem?
Thanks in advance,

Check the browser and the firewall settings.

I have the Windows firewall "OFF", and I have looked at everything I could think of in the browser settings. I'll keep looking there, though.
Thanks Sterling,

Run the Internet Connection Wizard from Internet Options. Tell windows you want to manually establish a connection to the net. You can then manually set the dial-up connection as your auto dial account. It has fixed three or four computers for me.
Try to dial-up again and see if the error is gone. If not go to the properties of the dialup connection and make sure there is no DNS or IP information set up for the dial-up account. Also make sure the ISP DNS servers are not down for maintenance.

All,
I apologize for my lack of response, but I have been hit with one B.A. cold virus! Early to bed, little time for anything else. I have been doing good to make it to work this week.
Mom and pop told me, " Well...dont you worry, Sonny. We'll be just fine without that ol' computer anyway. You just wait till you feel better." Hell...I feel guilty leaving someone else's PC "Internetless"!
I burned the WinsockxpFix to a CD-RW (they don't have a "floppy" drive). I'll try it maybe tomorrow, maybe Saturday morning. For sure, I'll let you guys know what comes of it all. I think it would be good feedback for Microsoft, too.
Thanks for your replies and check back,

I went to "Add/Remove Programs" and removed SP2. After just a few adjustments everything is OK and back to pre-SP2 status with my parents PC. I have SP2 at home and the only problem I encountered after the installation is that I lost all system sounds. If it doesn't play through WMP or Realplayer I can't hear it.
Do you have any help for me there? I prefer to keep SP2. I would just like to have my system sounds back.
Thanks again,

Here, read this article:

Try the program or the manual fix. When's the last time you heard winsock in the post win98/me era? The Winsock can get corrupted from cleaning up spyware, as well as spyware itself. This should alleviate connection problems in general, not just for sp2. This is especially valid for wireless connections. Give it a shot. It can't hurt. Actually, since you have sp2, try the microsoft fix and do not use the winsock fix app.
