Modem takes forever to connect

When I connect to my ISP it seems to take a long time to get past the "verifying user name and password" screen. I've got "connect using modem" selected in internet properties checked. I've reconfigured before to speed things up but cannot remember what I did. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Double click on Dialup Networking in My Computer, right click on the Icon for your ISP, go to properties, and then Server Types and uncheck the box "log on to network"

Go to the properties of your Dial Up connection /Server Types, uncheck 'Log onto network' - at the bottom for protocols only check TCP/IP.
