I just bought a brand new Maxtor 8.4 gig drive and a brand new Abit BX6 ver 2 mobo.
I recently noticed that the partitions i had made only added up to 4 gigs!!!! so i thought i just messed up partitioning...so i formated and booted up from a win 98 start up disk and ran fdisk....it only sees 4 out of the 8.4 gigs!!! so i tried over and over to do it..no luck...i ran fips...no luck..i ran disk druid....no luck...cfdisk...no luck they all only saw 4 gigs...I run linux byt he way(not that that should have anything to do with it because even with NO OS on it it only sees 4gigs) so i call Maxtor....tech support says deffienetly the mobo....so i looked in my bios..the CMOS sees 4 gigs and it is set to LBA. BUT the IDE auto dectect blah blah thing see's 8. so i brought the computer to where i got the mobo. 3 hours later they calla nd tell me its deffinetly the hard drive..WTF??..they said they put a samsung in and it worked fine. so i called maxtor back and they still say its the mobo but willsend me a drive replacement. WICH one is the problem????? what do i do. i never had this problem before. thanks

did you try setting it on "auto" instead of
LBA? Try that and see.

I saw this with a Maxtor once right after Low Level Formatting the drive.

It has to be low level formatted and you must absolutely have to select "NO" to the prompt about using LBA mode. If you say yes, you will only see the half of the drive!

I don't know why, but be happy it fixes it!

Well......With a different harddrive (samsung) in it you say IT shows up at 8 gig's I would have to say it is the Harddrive that is having a problem.(I would reason that if the MOBO can tell the size of different harddrive then it must be the hard drive that is messed up.as long as your sure you partitioned it right)...Do you have access to a different MOBO to try out your maxtor?

Good luck
