Which would be the faster machine, an abit NF7-S with a XP2500 overclocked to a 3200, or an ASUS P4P800V with a 2.8 P4? I don't completely understand the comparisons between Intel and AMD. I have used both of these machines, and the P4 seems a fair amount faster. I wanted your guys opinions. All other hardware is exactly the same including memory. Both are running dual channel pc3200. Thanks!!

Well, in real world performance they are both the same. Try looking into a AMD64 2800+, or even 300+ as they are around the 2.8Ghz Intel price, and perform much better then the two.

Between the XP and the P4C, I would say the P4C would have a slight advantage. But as stated, a more accurate comparison would the the A64 which should outperform the P4C.

The motherboard on the P4 is actually a P4G 800-V. I don't know if that would make any difference.

I agree with Yoshi, the price of the low end A64s is about the same and they will outperform the other CPUs by a large margin.

Agreed with the 64bit motion.

But if your only looking at socket A then a 2600+ Mobile would be a better option. Should overclock well over 3200+ Speeds...I think 2.4-2.5Ghz is normal on air.

I don't completely understand the comparisons between Intel and AMD. Basically its like this: Intel has higher raw clock speeds than AMD, but AMD's get more work done per clock cycle than Intel's so they pretty much = out in that way.

Then again, you could get a 3000+ or 2800+ A64, bring THAT to 2.5GHz, and really scream. You'd need good BH5 or PC4000 though for good timings with that kind of overclock.

Yeah, I'll go A64 some day probably by the end of 05, you?

Right now I got a gig of PC3500 OCZ EB Platinum Series :D

Dual core opteron, baby

Four CPUs in two sockets :D

Now, to pony up the cash

I'm just waiting for a revision or two of the Winchester core as they are faster clock per clock than the NewCastles (though not by much, enough to negate the 512k cache they are missing from the 1 meg FX lineup in most instances). Also they'll have better yields so OC's should be better. If I'm going to plop down 150 for a new motherboard and 150-250 for a new CPU, I want a huge improvement. Going from 2.2 to 2.6 on air (with a 7 volted panaflo, so I have headroom cooling wise) with a 90 buck chip change was much more effective. Prime didn't like it though, even though the Vcore was probably the lowest it had ever been on that board in a long time. Regulators took off like rockets. :D

If you want to save money as your comfortable with how your system is running now, but want a decent boost that isn't going to break your wallet, a 2600 mobile and a Thermalright HS (which can be carried over and still be top of the line air for later) isn't bad at all.

Made a difference in gaming, but everything else is pretty much the same other than encoding. Not much really needs that much sheer power right now.
