Freezups

I have a problem with random freezups. They seem to happen with equal frequency on and off the web. I cannot run Half-life or viavoice at all and some games and simulators start and then freezup. My system uses an Abit TX5 board, AMD 233 chip, 96 meg of memory, and an ATI Expert at work video card. I have no drive with less than a gig of available space. I get no blue screen when it freezes. Does this mean that the problem is with software? I would appreciate any help.

Have a similar problem on my K6-300 system and isolated it to the cpu overheating. My reseller said to install an extra fan (and sold me one), but there's no room to install it. So I'm just running without the enclosure cover for the time being. I may have to go to a bigger tower with more fans. But at least the freeze-up have stopped.
