Some weeks ago I posted a problem not able to type fraction symbols beside the default ones (1/2, 1/4 and 3/4). Someone from this board kindly reply and informative instructions on how to proceed. But after several attempts I didn't succeed. I did install the Equation Editor for MsWord 97. The part i'm getting confuse is the following. Once you have put the numerator and denominator in the dotted box, it suggest to clik back into your document. Well, only the "{EMEBED EQUIATION 3}" appears on the page. What am I suppose to do from there? The following step is to type the fraction and format the number with subscrip and superscript. ??? I pasted the instruction...if anyone of you can clear the smoke I would appreciated. Right now i screw somthing and all my document are subscript. grrrrrrr!

Thanks

Method 2: Use Equation Editor to Create the Fraction:

NOTE: The Equation Editor is NOT installed during a typical installation. If you ran a typical installation, you will need to quit Word and run Setup again to install the Equation Editor, before using this method.

This method creates a fraction with a diagonal line between the numerator and the denominator.

1. Place the insertion point where you want the fraction to appear.

2. On the Insert menu, click Object.

3. In the Object Type list, click Microsoft Equation 2.0 (Microsoft Word

for Windows 95, version 7.0) or Microsoft Equation 3.0 (Word 97), and
then click OK.

4. In the Equation toolbar, click the second button in the second row.

5. Click to select the type of fraction you want. To match other symbols in the document, you probably want the smaller fraction with the diagonal.Click the second button in the second row.

6. In the dashed boxes, type the numerator and denominator.

7. Click outside the equation area to return to Word.
(this is what appears on the document "{embed Equation.3}"
What am i suppose to do from there..do i follow whats' below???)

Method 3: Use Superscript and Subscript Formatting to Create the Fraction:

1. Place the insertion point where you want the fraction to appear.

2. Type the numerator and then select it.

3. On the Format menu, click Font.

4. On the Font tab, under Effects, select the Superscript check box, and

then click OK. The numerator is now superscripted.

5. Press CTRL+SPACEBAR to clear the superscript format for the remainder of
the fraction.

6. Type the fraction separator bar "/" (without the quotation marks).

7. Type the denominator and then select it.

8. On the Format menu, click Font.

9. On the Font tab, under Effects, select the Subscript check box, and then click OK. The denominator is now subscripted.

*To Create an AutoCorrect Entry for the Fraction Symbol

1. Click to select the fraction symbol you just created.

2. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect. Under "Replace text as you type,"

the fraction appears in the With box.

3. In the Replace box, type the numbers in the fraction. For example, type "1/8" (without the quotation marks).

4. Click Formatted Text, and then click OK.
When you type the fraction text in the document, the fraction symbol appears automatically after you press the SPACEBAR.

kgb-No offense, but this is a hardware site not a software. However, sometimes if your lucky, you'll get an answer to your problem.Wish I could help you,but at least your post will be moved to the top of the list for today.....DawgTuff.

I can't help either KGB, but you are in the "General Discussion" Forum, so I think your question is appropriate here. After all, if things like "What's your favorite drink", etc. is posted here, I don't see a problem with you posting a viable question, hardware OR software related.

Sorry if I stepped on your toes Dawgtuff, just wanted to clear this up. /forum/frown.gif

kgb's question is absolutely appropriate here.

Anyway kgb, I found a KB article and it shows something a bit different regarding the Equation you used?

EQ \F(a,b)

where a and b are the numerator and denominator of the fraction.

For example, if you want to create the fraction 1/8, the field would
look like this

{ EQ \F(1,8)}

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but here's the article, most of the text is the same as what you've posted...

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q137/7/34.asp

Hope it helps.

I use MS Office everyday and am amazed at how much "stuff" is in there I am totally 404 about /forum/wink.gif

Hi, I am in General Discussion, and the above problem is not a hardware problem.

Anyway, I still can't make it work. I tried the methode #2 and that where i'am stuck. The document suggest you can try either methode1 or 2. Or does it mean you have to go through both methode in order to get it???
I"m kind of confuse here.

Thanks

You can do it with method #1 correct?

You’re trying the other two methods because you want the diagonal divider?

The choice is either or. Not each one together.

Yeah..exatly...I'm using methode 2. Where i get confuse is at the step where in the Equation Editor, once you have put the fraction, this case 7/8, in the dotted boxes, you just clik back to Word and the only thing appears in Word is {Equation Editor 3} and not the fraction which is what i'm suspecting to happen? Is there something missing? I tried the other option in Eq.Editor throught File but that didnt work out either. So what is the next step after you insert the numbers in the dotted boexes.

George.

kgb:

If you try either one of the methods with a test document, do the equations PRINT correctly even though the screen display shows {EMBEDDED EQUATION}?

This may be way off, but it reminds me of a problem that my dad had with embedding graphics and page numbers, where all he would see is {Page Number} instead of the actual page number, etc. I forget how I fixed it, though... I think I toggled one of the Tools->Options boxes. You may be using Equation Editor correctly but not embedding or displaying the objects properly.

I just tried Method #1 on my copy of Word97 and it worked fine.

[This message has been edited by jeana (edited 09-24-99).]

As a matter of fact, I remember what I did. I went to MS-Word Help, and looked up "embed". I looked at the topic on displaying embedded objects as graphics, etc.
It advised me to punch Ctrl-Shift-F9, which for some reason worked.

Moreover, I just looked at Help again. In "Embedded Objects->Troubleshooting" there's some advice just for you. Word is displaying field codes. Go to Tools->Options->View and clear the Field codes check box.

Good luck!

All you have to do after that, is click on the page.

But I presume this is not working for you?

When you select the "Fraction and Radical Templates" button, are you choosing the solid diagonal symbol instead of the dotted one?

If this is the case, and you are point/click/typing the number, I think something isn't quite right with your Word program.

Have you updated Word with the SR1 and SR2 patches?

I checked Method 1 before posting the reply to this the first time. I just checked Method 2. It works as described. Actually, it is easier than #1.

I am using Word 97 SR-2 with Equation Editor 3.0....

~edit

I just tried it with the other diagonal choices, they all work. If it's not a program update issue, the only thing I can suggest is removing Word and installing it again with the Custom option to include Equation. Then patch it.

The security patch is installed.
Any more suggestion..can anyone try it on their station by following the instructions. And let me know what happen after the step in Equation Editor.

Thanks
