Hi.

I'm looking to upgrade from my Ti4200 to a newer, bigger, better, etc video card. I am looking at the ASUS V9999/GE/TD/256 and the V9999/GT/TD/128 (the GT will cost me about $110 CDN less). I don't think the amount of memory on the card will affect many games (except DoomIII and the like), so I guess my main question is...

Does the GT core make up for the slower memory speed in comparison to the GE? Looking at TomsHardware.com the GT always beats the non-GT in benchmarks, but the specs are not known on any card.

I am very happy with ASUS's products, but should I move to another brand to get a better deal? I do not OC and 1-2 FPS in Doom III make no difference to me. I look for the best quality for my money and not the fastest card that only lasts 3 months before burning up.

Thanks for your opinions and input.

Asus is doing some sketchy things. The GT has 6 vertex shaders and 16 pixel pipelines by default. the NU core has only 5/12.

I would steer clear of Asus and go with a more reference type card.

The ASUS GE is a reg 6800 with 256MB of RAM, The GT will perform much better

Get either EVGA, BFG, or Leadtek:t

Thanks for the info.

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with Leadtek? They don't strike me as a high quality manufacturer, but I could be wrong. eVGA seems decent and BFG seems ok as well. How about Chaintech? I have no experience with these companies at all and I don't want to buy a big bulky paperweight.

Thanks.

BFG is solid. Preoverclocked and lifetime warranty. The Rev2 GTs have a dual fan copper heatsink.

Leadtek has a custom copper heatsink on their 6800 series cards. They have a reputation for being a good overclocking company.

Gainward Golden Sample cards are sweet too.

evga and chaintech have nvidia reference cards, so they aren't really spectacular.

Please look at the link I posted. There are about 20 different 6800GT review links on there.
