Long story, but here goes...

Built a new system with all new hardware and new hard drive. Reinstalling all the software new is not an option. I have copied the old HD to the new - no problem. All the old software is intact.

But...WIN98 is having a complete fit when it comes to installing any HD controllers. As of now, there are none listed when I get into safe mode.

Before I had a chance to install the drivers from the CD ROM, WIN gave me no CD ROM drive. Okay, I say...Reinstall WIN. I've done that before and it works. Except this time.

I have reinstalled WIN three times and have renamed system.ini and win.ini these times to no avail. It locks up when starting WIN for the first time. (Gets stuck after searching the CD ROM and HD)

I can only get into it from safe mode, which is no help to installing any hardware.

How can I force WIN to install and redetect all the new hardware...other than the steps I have taken?

Like I said, reformatting isn't an option. Just getting WIN to run in normal mode would help. Oh, I have deleted all prior entries in SYSTEM from previous hardware so it could be redetected. But it won't redetect???

Thanks for any input. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes. It's just WIN

Go into Registry Editor. Look for a "NO IDE" entry. Delete it and reboot. Hopefully you will get your controllers back. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Have your read BBA's post http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/000956.html if you have a good boot disk you might want to try his suggestion.

You can also go into device manager from safe mode and remove the PCI device completely, then reboot and let it detect.

If it ask for the CD when installing componants, then I would copy the WIN98 directory from the CD onto the hard drive from a dos prompt if you have a boot disk with CD drivers.

Try that, and try it with nothing but the hard drive and video card present, then add one thing at a time.

Thanks for all your fast replies. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

It eventually worked out and runs great now.
I've never seen WIN have such trouble installing HD controllers before (there were none listed at all)...After the fourth reinstall it finally worked. ??

Thanks!
