I'm in the process of building a new rig for myself. The main problem I am facing is which video card to buy.

I love the look of the x800, but I just can't see the value in a card costing that much (for myself)

The rig I am building consists of :

Chieftec hightower dragon
Targan 480watt CPU
Intel P4 3.2 800FSB
Asus P4C800 Deluxe motherboard (i've got one in my other rig, and runs fantastic, but if anybody has suggestions on something better let me know.)
3 x 120GB maxtor 8mb
NEC 12x dvd burner
dvd player.
etc etc

I've still got to buy most of the components, but the video card is where i'm having the most problems with.

I play a few games, all fairly demanding on the video card (far cry, doom 3), but i'm not a game freak.

I normally upgrade once a year, so I don't need a card which will be good enough for games which will come out in a couple of years.

The 9600 or the 9800 seem to fall into this category, but which one????????

Anyone got a good bit of advice for me ??

(I've got max $300.00 to spend)

The usual recommendation for the $300 category is the GeForce 6800 which is ~$270 here.

I have seen the GeForce 6800, but unfortunately prices here in Holland are still pretty steep.

I looked quickly on a couple of sites :

FX 6800GT 256MB - $600.00
FX 6800 128MB - $385.00
NX6800 TD128 128mb - $460.00

As you can see, we are lagging a bit behind with the prices.

I've just found a store with this card :

Asus V9999TD GeForce 6800, 128 MB DDR, TV-Out, DVI - $365.00

Any comments ?

If your upgrading in a year anyways the 9800pro will run all the near future games with decently high settings. The 6800GT is definately the more powerfull card, but more expensive also. Both are good buys, just depends how much you want to spend for the extra few notches of AA/AF.

I would consider an Athlon 64 system for gaming, but the Pentium you picked is fine.

Edit:

Oh yea, why 3xHard Drives?

Thanks for the advice, now i'll just have to see what i've got left over in the kitty for the video card. I would love to get the 6800Gt, but it's just a little too heavy on the wallet.

I went for the P4 3.2 because I was able to pick up a new ASUS P4C800 E deluxe for almost half the normal price.

I've alread got the Nec, which is coming out of another PC.

The three HDD's are for photo's, films and music back up, but I picked up 8 new 250GB S-ata maxtors yesterday for $140.00 each(dirt cheap for over here, normal price $240.00) , so the 120Gb's are out, and S-ATA's are in. I'll use 2 or 3 and sell the rest to help finance this project.

Thanqs again for the feedback
