I made a boo boo.
I was cleaning up some duplicate files on my website file mgr, and I accidentally deleted my main index.html file.
There are other index.html files in other directories, so I thought this was a duplicate, but it was a very important file.
All my pages and pics are still there, but in title only, no file size.
Half my website file space went "poof" 25 mb down to 13 mb.
I've spent hours re uploading the pages and pics, but now I need to re do an index file, I have no idea where to start.
I checked with my server and I unfortunately have no back up.
I am a rookie at this and my buddy who put this site together for me is out of town for a week or 2.
I have created a temp " down for maint" html page that I would like to pop up on my opening page 'til my buddy gets back.
I am using MS Frontpage, and Win 98SE.

Can someone suggerst how I can create this temp index.html file ? I know where it goes in my website file mgr when I create it.

Thanks
GPo

First of all, look in your Temporary Internet Files for it - when you browse the website the browser downloads it's files, namely the one you need. Don't use Windows' search tool, it won't search the temporary files, you'll have to look into the directory yourself. If you want to know where the temporary files are, on Internet Explorer go to the Tools menu, select Internet Options and press Settings on the Temporary Internet Files pane.

On how to rebuild the index.html file, well...it all depends on what your webpage looked like and what functionalities offered...you'll need to get hands on with the whole set of pages that were linked by it to develop a new one.

Thanks for your help Bassman.
I think I found the file.
It is the only html file that I don't recognize within my website files. It is in the name of my domaine.
The other html files are the pages, so I think it is the index.
I'll just rename it "index", put it back and see what happens.

Thanks

It looks like it is a starting point. I reinstalled the index file.
My website opening page is up now, and I have to reload all my other pages and picture files. Not sure why they all dissappeared, I'll never do that again, but it is better than starting from scratch.

Thanks Bassman.
