MY Dell computer is practically brand new, we got it a few weeks ago. Contained with in the computer is a built in CD-RW drive (E http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. Also known as a CD burner. I am very familiar with CD burners, because i worked with one all year while i was at school on my roomate's computer, and he was an expert with it. The first cd I burned on my new computer was succesful. It contained various mp3's that were converted to wav files and wav files from previously purchased cd's that I put onto our hard drive. The second CD i attempted to make came out with a loud sound of static accompanying the sixth through the last song. This CD was once again mp3s to wavs and wavs from cd songs. I tried it again because i thought it could have just been a defective CD. The result again was static throughout the entire CD. Now, I thought it could have been the brand of CD. So, I tried a different brand, again with the same result of static throughout the entire CD. That's when i called dell for technical support. The man I talked to told me to try to make a CD from a previous CD that i purchased from a store ( for example an entire Will Smith CD). He told me to try this because he thought that the mp3s could have been effecting the process. So, I tried that, and still the identical will smith CD came out with static on the whole CD. Again, I called Dell, and spoke with a different man this time. He instructed me to change the speed of the drive from 4x 600KB/sec to 2x 300KB/sec. He told me that this speed supported music files better, and that this should cure my problem. Once again, it didn't. The burned CD had static throughout it. That brings me to you. I am convinced that there is something wrong with the drive itself and that it's not a software problem. Again, I think we were given a faulty CD-RW drive. What can I do? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sweepr9,

Before you go thru the headache of getting an RMA for the drive check to see if you can copy a "data" cd. as you say you are having trouble burning "audio" cd's...if the burner is truely at fault it will not beable to burn a "data" cd (burn a backup copy of your Win9x cd or some other software title you have) What software are you using with the burner? What brand is your burner? What are the "spec's" on your new computer?

I bet we can figure out what is happening!

but first I would double check to make sure ALL cables are connected properly to the burner...IE: IDE cable/Scuzzy cable (since you didnt mention what type) 2 Audio cable.(both analog and digital if your burner has them)

Good luck and keep us posted on what you have checked and tried!
