Ok... I dont know what went wrong. I own a CL GB Riva TNT AGP and everything was working fine but Final Fantasy VII. Then I read on the EIDOS support site that if a have problems using the patch I should use the reference drivers from Nvidia. Well, I downloaded the Detonator 1.88 drivers for the AGP version of the Riva TNT (which also includes the drivers for the TNT2 Ultra, TNT2, TNT2 64 and Vanta chipsets).

I instaled the drivers and I noticed that my resolution was switched back to 640x480 at 256 colors, strange?. Well I set my resolution back to 1280x1024 at 35K colors and it worked flawlessly. Final Fanatsy VII ran well, Half-Life still has the dissapearing blood and explosions as you get close to them, but I didn't care about it. After that I restarted my PC and my resolution was switched back again to 40x480 at 256 colors, now that's strange!. Every time I restart windows my resolution is switched back to 640x480. I tried reinstalling the drivers from Creative and windows reports that there is a display problem and it stays at 640x480 but at 16 colors. I reinstalled the Nvidia drivers and the original problems persisted. What else can I do? Please e-mail any post.

Thanks for your help and waiting for an answer...

You may need to completely remove all the drivers, and set your adapter to standard vga. Then reboot and reinstall.

Thanks Susan:

I already did that and it didn't work. The problems still persists. Any ideas?

Which OS are you using?

I had that same problem. The 640/480 screen resolution at start up was really getting old. I went with Susan's suggestion and intalled standard vga drivers, re-booted then installed the Detonator 1.88 drivers (AGP) and have had success..
Using: STB VELOCITY 4400 16MG video card

The reason I ask which OS is because WIN98 is real tough when it comes to changing hardware. WIN95 can be much more forgiving.
What I have notice with WIN98 is that it seems to retain alot of previous info about a system - even when drivers and software have been removed. As many times as one may uninstall, reboot and redetect, WIN98 sometimes insists on installing the wrong drivers.

What motherboard are you using and chipset. If you are unsing the VIA Super Seven chipset you will have this same problem until you either install or reinstall the Mini Port Drivers.

When you uninstall the drivers, try going into the windows/"inf" folder(show all hidden files option so u can see it), when in it go into other, then delete any nvidia info. Now, change to standard vga, reboot and install new drivers. Hope this helps.

You might have better luck using the updated drivers from www.soundblaster.com-Creative's website.
Oh, and thanks Steve! I used your tactic and got rid of any trace of my creative savage4 card.
Now I play Half-Life in 1600x1200...
