scanner freezes and loses connection to computer

I am trying to stop my UMAX 1220U scanner from freezing and losing it's connection with the computer. I have a Toshiba infinia 6171 with a Pentium 166mmx with Win 95 version 950b with 2 USB hubs and 64mb EDO ram. I've tried a Freememory download to Allocate and free 40mb not more than 15 times on the free memory tab before and after starting Adobe photodeluxe 2.0 and vistascan V3.1. When these programs start Memory goes to 6MB, if I run freemem at that point it goes up to 38 mb and I start the scan, it goes down to 30mb but still freezes and loses it's connection to the computer. At what resolution are you trying to scan, if you are trying to scan at 600 dpi or above, at 16 bit or above colors, and the area you are trying to scan is large (full page), you might not have enough memory to handle it. Try lowering the DPI or the amount of colors, or add more RAM to your computer.

Some scanners will freeze if you try to run PreScan in less than 16-bit colors.
