Hey Sysopt :)
I have a file here that is 2.55GB , yes GIGA
and i want to compress it as best i can without losing too much quality.
It's a 1 hour Recording of the Apprentice if you must know (my cousin is on it)
I tried bink and smacker, and that doesn't work correctly, i dont think it likes large files/mpg's.
Any idea, oh, i need it fast too

Maybe DVD Shrink will do it.
I never tried MPG files yet.

How much do you need to compress it? As it is it would fit on a DVD easy, but if you are trying to put it on a CD then I can't imagine it would even be watchable.

have you tried making it an AVI with something like virtualdub and using an xvid codec?

Using VirtualDub and mpeg4 compression is great, but if you ever intend on using this as a source file I wouldn't recommend it. Try using TMPGEnc (http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html) to split the file into smaller segments while still retaining the same compression settings. I'm sure there will be some minor quality loss, but thats unavoidable. You'll need multiple CDs, but until you get a DVD burner some things need to be tolerated.
