Hi All,

I'm just wondering if anyone has encountered a similar problem. I'm troubleshooting someone's PC because they had a virus which corrupted some Windows 95B file. One was related to the TCP/IP (winsock.dll).

In any event, I de-installed all network drivers (protocols, clients, etc.). I also de-installed IE 4 and any internet related Win95. I ensured that all files have been removed in the Windows and System directory.

Then, I then re-installed everything. Anyways, when I dial up to the IP, I noticed that the Modem volume is very low (even if I ensured that it is set to max). Also, it seems that both IE 4 and Outlook express cannot connect to the modem as I get a message that I cannot connect to server, even if I have the connected icon in my bar.

Does this seem to be a software or hardware problem? I tried faxing something and that works, minus the volume.

Have you tried un-installing the modem then disconnect the modem. Reboot. Shut down after a succesful reboot. Re-insert/ re-install the modem and all necessary drivers for its operation make sure properties are set correctly and try connecting again.

I will have to do it on the weekend but the Modem (Diamond SupraMax)automatically detects and loads the appropriate drivers (it will not ask me for a path for the drivers). I guess I can just find an upgrade to the drivers so that I can overwrite the existing drivers (if they were infected by the virus and corrupted it somehow).

Thanks,

Hi All,

I just put in a fresh image of Windows and Internet Explorer works. However, the modem volume is still almost inaudible!

Again, I have tried changing the volume in multiple property areas but to no avail.

1) Do you guys think that the modem is broken, even if it still connects to the net and is able to fax?

2) Is there a initialization string that would increase the volume.

P.S. I upgraded to the latest drivers from Diamond but it only upgrades the HCF driver, not the actual modem driver. Any hints on how to do this one?

I believe the init string values that affect volume are M and L (something like M3 and L3 for loudest) but your best bet may be to head over to a modem specialist site like:
808hi.com/56k (http://808hi.com/56k) or 56k.com (http://56k.com) .
