I downloaded the upgrade software, and now I am being advised that the software key is wrong. Iv'e been using the original disk since it has been installed. I am being sent to howtotell.com. Do I need sp2, if so how can I correct the error.

can you be more specific?

Did you download SP2 and install it, and now it is telling you that your CD key is invalid? Is that what is happening? Is it a legal copy of windows? Have you given your copy to anybody?

I've sent you a PM regarding how to change your CD key, this in info that is easily available from microsoft's own site if you type in the right key words so I'm not promoting piracy or anything like that.
You do of course need a valid CD Key for this process to be of any use. You may have mistyped a single letter or number, or you could be running a nasty copy of windows XP. Does the cd key you are using start with "FCKGW-RHQQ2"? If so its one of the pirated corporate cd keys that have been blocked out of SP1 and 2. This particular pirate key was the most widely used one when XP first was released. Many copies of it appeared completely legit and only lacked the difficult-to-reproduce microsoft hologram on the CD itself.

Yes it is one of those listed. When I bought it on E-Bay I thought it was legit. What are my solutions? I do get some of the upgrades, and I am not having any real problems. Would you buy anther copy or wait for anther software release.

Would I be able to just upgrade my existing system with an original copy?? Would I be better off waiting for new Windows that may be out soon. How much is the original now.

This may help...

You should be able to just buy a valid license and not have to re-install.

You know what you need to do so I am closing this thread.

Good luck! :D
