I have an alton 598 motherboard everything works fine until I install a modem then I have no sound and video and my monitor does not come on everytime I turn my computer on. I have tried different modems that work in other machines. before modem is installed sound is on IRQ 11 after modem is installed it switches to IRQ 9. thanks for any help

Does this modem setup with jumpers? If it does,check for free irq's and com ports on your machine. Then set the modem so there are no conflicts. If you are using a ps/2 mouse - Disable com 2 in the bios. If you are using a serial mouse - Disable ps/2 mouse support in the bios. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

MODEM DOES NOT HAVE JUMPERS. WHEN I TRY TO CHANGE IRQ MANUALLLY MESSAGE SAYS IT CAN NOT BE CHANGED. I'M USING A PCI MODEM WHEN I PHYSICALLY REMOVE MODEM EVERYTHING WORKS FINE, EVEN IF I LEAVE SOFTWARE INSTALLED. THANKS

What kind of Modem is it? Is it a ISA or PCI you might try and switch slots that the modem is in. Really need more info.

I HAVE TRIED 2 MODEMS A ZOOM & ON SPEED BOTH ARE 56K MODEMS BOTH WORK IN OTHER MACHINES I HAVE 3 PCI SLOTS I HAVE TRIED ALL SLOTS.THANKS BILLY

Try to set IRQ allocation to manual in your BIOS.
